Letter from a grandmother: “Get that white girl.”

Mr. Flaherty,

You know, I am 59 years old and in my youth used to be all about “equality” until I found out that meant me being tolerant and not other “groups.”

My 9 yr old granddaughter experienced, for the first time, racism just last month.

My little granddaughter, who is white, plays on a select basketball team in a select league. Long story short, she is, as you may have ascertained, white.

Skin color meant (note past tense) nothing to her heretofore. When we played a game in a black neighborhood with an all black team, and had black referees, our girls immediately noticed there was something amiss (and they are only 9).

My granddaughter is very good and is quick and has great shooting ability (she is blessed). When we were ahead and she had scored almost all of the points, the crowd for the other team kept yelling “get that that white girl” and “don’t let that little white girl beat you.”:

Needless to say, this was offensive, and we tried to point it out to the referees so they could control the tone of the game. They did not. Instead, they called our “little white girl” and our other “white girls” for nonexistent fouls while ignoring our fans.

We won the game in spite of this, but because we, collectively and individually, were threatened with harm (including our girls), we quickly exited and left. I felt completely vulnerable and had my pepper spray ready to use. What a sad state of affairs…all because the blacks could not behave nor face reality.
