A St. Paul man is in a coma today, fighting for his life after a black mob beat him, stripped his clothes off, and left him for dead. Even if he recovers, he will have permanent brain damage.

Ray Widstrand thought he had nothing to fear from moving into a black neighborhood on the East Side of St. Paul. This young white guy and aspiring film maker thought he had nothing to fear when decided to take a Sunday night stroll through his adopted part of town.

Nothing to fear from a crowd of 50 black people fighting outside a nearby party. So he stopped to check it out.

Soon the mob’s attention turned to him: “The first person who struck him had hit him with a can in a sock,” said one witness in a police report. “The man went down and a “whole bunch of little eastside boys” began to kick the man. She saw them strip him of his pants and go through the pockets.”

When police arrived, the black mob scattered, leaving only Ray behind, unconscious. “He had blood coming from his nose and mouth and was unresponsive,” said the police report. “As of August 8th, the prognosis for recovery is slight and should he live, he will suffer permanent and protracted loss of brain function.”

Four black people have been arrested so far.

At a press conference. Ray’s father said his son did not feel the neighborhood was dangerous. Ray was a good person, a gentle person, a sweet person, said his friends and family. He like comic books and posing in super hero outfits for gag photos. As an aspiring film-maker, Ray contributed the opening sequence of a local cable access news talk show that was about “Meeting Neighbors. Making Friends.”

This 26-year old free spirit took people as he found them. He hoped for the same. Others in St. Paul know better. At least in that neighborhood:

“This is not super uncommon,” said Bob Fox in the reader comment section of the Pioneer Press. “I have seen a white guy or two get surrounded and beat down and robbed quite a few times. Around the bus stops at 5th and Minnesota and 6th and Minnesota are the worst. Damn right it is a hate crime. They attack like a pack of wolves.”

Many of the episodes of the black mob violence in the Twin Cities region — and the officials denials they are happening at all — are documented in White Girl Bleed a Lot: The return of racial violence and how the media ignore it.

There are dozens of examples in the book where some, like Ray, feel invulnerable to the danger of racial violence. Some died.

They were suffering from what psychologists called an inflated sense of safety in overtly dangerous situations: “Infantile omnipotence.”

“Some people think they can be safe in a dangerous neighborhood,” said Marlin Newburn, a former prison psychologist and author of the upcoming book: Send Your Kids to Jail. A Manual for the Mutant Parent. “They are like infants. Preadolescents truly feel themselves as 10 feet tall and bullet proof, and the infantalized teen or adult feels the same way: They do not believe what they have not personally experienced.”

Earlier this year in Chicago, a jury said much the same thing. The City of Chicago paid $22.5 million to the family of a white woman that city jailers released into a black neighborhood. Soon after meeting with a crowd of black people, she was tossed from a seven-story building. Some still say she jumped to avoid a violent attack.

During the trial, Harvard sociology professor Robert Sampson said it can be routinely expected that white people in black neighborhoods are in danger. He called it RAT: Routine Activity Theory. The judge explained RAT by saying the woman “was a white female in a predominantly black, poor neighborhood (and) she had a much higher risk of predatory victimization.”

Judge Frank Easterbrook went on: “She is white and well-off while the local population is predominantly black and not affluent, causing her to stand out as a person unfamiliar with the environment and, thus, a potential target for crime.”

The woman had approached a black resident of a nearby housing project for help but was turned away. “The woman got on my floor and tried to get in apartment,” said one resident to the Chicago ABC affiliate. “I said, ‘No, white and black don’t mix.’”

The City of Chicago tried to say that RAT was thinly disguised racial profiling. But at the trial, RAT and race were everywhere – no matter how hard the city worked to keep it out. No matter how dedicated local media were to ignoring it.

If Ray depended on the local media for information, he would not have been aware of an epidemic of racial violence in the Twin Cities region. Many examples of this violence are documented, often with video tape, in White Girl Bleed a Lot: The return of racial violence and how the media ignore it.

Last year, a rash of more than a dozen cases of black mob attacks in downtown Minneapolis left at least one man with severe brain injuries as well.

A St. Patrick’s day mauling from 20 black people left a graphic artists with serious brain injuries and no short-term memory.

An hour before he was beat and kicked into the Intensive Care Unit, 20 black people assaulted an out-of-town couple at the exact same intersection. The Star Tribune was squeamish about reporting the race of the criminals, but City Pages was not:

Melissa screamed as three separate youths came at Kirk, throwing punches. Kirk says he was able to dodge the blows. He remembers one of the assailants smiling while he threw punches, “like it was fun.” As people on the street started to take notice of the attack, the mob dispersed, leaving Kirk one-on-one with a man he says was over 6 feet tall.

“I dodged several of his punches before he ran off,” Kirk said, adding that he himself didn’t punch anyone. “I believe that if it wasn’t for my wife’s screaming I would have been seriously injured.” Thankfully, he ended up with nothing more than a swollen neck. Melissa, a 33-year-old school teacher, was pushed, and one of the assailants burned her hand with a cigarette, she says.

Ray Widstrand 1 Ray Widstrand 2After the mob dispersed, Kirk and Melissa made their way back to the Marquette. There, they talked to a police officer about the incident.

Wrote Melissa in an email: The “cop wasn’t that interested in taking a report, since we didn’t have descriptions – just African-American…[I] wonder how many people have been attacked, since our story isn’t even part of the stats.”

There were others, lots of others, at the Mall of America, St. Paul and other places throughout the area.

But the daily papers are loathe to report the race of the perpetrators. Or how they occur from black mob exponentially out of proportion.

In September 2011, a group of black people attacked a mobile alcoholic beverage cart in Minneapolis – stealing, threatening. The newspapers dutifully reported the crime, and dutifully ignored the race of the attackers.

Except for the University of Minnesota newspaper, which in its early editions identified the attackers by race, but removed it in later editions.

Which is how it should be, said Minneapolis police spokesman William Palmer: “The MPD does not track arrestees by race,” said Palmer. “And frankly, no, it doesn’t matter. We arrest and prepare criminal cases for consideration of prosecution for those people who choose to break the law. Race has nothing to do with it.”

Maybe the City of Chicago should have called Palmer as a witness. Maybe it could have saved the city $22.5 million from a civil judgement that said otherwise.

As the attacks proliferate, so do the denials that race has anything to do with the attacks. But more and more people in the Twin Cities region are wondering what is going on. They also wonder when local media and public officials are going to start to tell the truth about it.

“A gang of African American males and females beat a white male nearly to death, and it isn’t a hate crime?” said Tiffany Johnson in the reader comment section of the Pioneer Press. “And why isn’t the NAACP speaking out about this terrible crime?”

“The media continues to dismay with their clear double standard in news coverage regarding their agenda in matters of race,” said Keith Olson. “The media loves to sensationalize white-on-black victimization and literally turns a blind eye when the races are reversed. I am not surprised whatsoever that whites are finally showing their displeasure with this sort of distortion when it comes to the propaganda they are fed.”

“If you look at the crime stats, the VAST majority of such incidents are committed by young black males,” said Jim Russell. “We can’t help them solve this problem if we won’t admit it exists. Don’t make it worse by falling for the pc media narratives.”

The beating took place Sunday, August 4, but local residents did not learn about it from local media for almost a week: That also brought down a heaping of scorn on local media. This comment found at the web site of the local ABC affiliate: “These losers stomped on this mans head and practically beat him to death!,” said Nicole Rhoades. “Why did it take so long to get news coverage on this story?!?!”

Neither are most as kind as Nkosi Thandiwe. Last year in Atlanta, he saved everyone the trouble of wondering whether the murder he committed was “racially motivated.” He testified he learned to hate white people in college and that is why he killed one white person and hurt a few others.

And if anyone had any doubts about why a carful of five black people drove through the French Quarter just a few days ago assaulting white and gay people, they made that clear by announcing their intentions with racial and sexual slurs.

But most racial violence does not come gift wrapped with racial expletives or press releases or Tweets that say “90% of white ppl are nasty. #HATE THEM.” As was the case in the recent Oklahoma killing of Chris Lane.

That’s why a crowd of 50 black people in Norfolk could beat up two reporters last year. And why their editor refused to even report the crime for two weeks. He said he had no evidence it was “racially motivated.”

Let’s give the trolls and the deniers their due. A single episode of black mob violence in New York, or Atlanta, or New Orleans or Norfolk or Burlington, North Carolina is hardly enough to merit national attention to an epidemic of racial violence.

But when these episodes of black mob violence continue over and over again; and when the race of the predators in the mobs continues to be exponentially out of proportion; and when many are on videos featuring the bad actors bragging about their exploits; even the brightest star in the MSNBC line-up is hard pressed to answer two simple questions:

What is going on with this epidemic of black mob violence all over the country? And how long will the press ignore it?WhiteGirl_300x250_01

The racial violence is not just happening in the Baltimores, Bostons, Chicagos, Detroits, Phillies, and New Yorks. But also the Peorias, Springfields, Dovers and even Burlingtons of the world.

More and more people in these tiny corners of the world want some answers too.

Burlington and Greensboro, for example, used to be Andy of Mayberry country. Today it is a center of racial violence — and official denial. As was documented in White Girl Bleed a Lot: The return of racial violence and how the media ignore it.

Over the last two years, Greensboro has been the site of more than a dozen  episodes of large-scale black mob violence. It got so bad prior to the Fourth of July this year that the Greensboro city council met in an emergency session to put a curfew in the downtown area.

In addition to violence earlier this summer, they were afraid of a repeat of last year’s Fourth of July mayhem: 1000 black people rampaged through the streets of Greensboro, beating people up, destroying property, attacking police.  Tear gas and tasers took care of that. Some of it, anyway.

This was not the first episode of black mob violence, as the local TV news breathlessly reported in July 2012:

“We’ve uncovered a series — a series! — of mob attacks in the heart downtown Greensboro,” said the anchor for the WFMY news. “All of them planned through the social media. And I know it sounds unlikely but it has happened in Chicago and Philadelphia and Milwaukee and now right here in the Triad. Every single weekend this month.

Some might think it strange that hundreds of black people were storming through the busiest part of their city, creating epic levels of violence and mayhem, and it took the local news more than a month to notice.

Even then, never once reporting the race of the culprits: There were no printed signs. No epithets. No racist tweets. So it never happened.

Despite the objections of at least one city council member that the curfew would disproportionately affect black people, the city council imposed it anyway.

Even so, the black mob violence in Greensboro continued with at least two major episodes after the curfew was imposed. Including one episode just a few blocks outside of the Maginot Line-like curfew zone.

Now quiet Burlington is trying to catch up.

In July, a mob of at least eight black people beat and robbed a man on a Saturday afternoon. Police soon arrested one person and are looking for the others.

The injuries may not have been “life threatening” as local police say, but to the victims, violent crime is life changing.

“If you look at the news accounts of this case of black on white violence, the police and press tell us this was not a major crime,” said Taleeb Starkes, author of The Uncivil War. “There was not much money involved. The victim lived. But one of the reasons these crimes happen so much is that we take them so lightly. This kind of violent crime is life changing and traumatic to the victim. But we rarely treat the predators that way. If they lose a little money and no one gets hurt, its no harm, no foul. That has to change.”

Just two days before this robbery and beat down, a group of at least five black people broke into a Burlington home and assaulted several people.

“The victims described the intruders as five black males wearing black clothing; each had his face covered and was armed with a handgun.

According to police, several victims were physically assaulted with blunt force, and one was transported by Alamance County EMS to Alamance Regional Medical Center with injuries that weren’t considered life threatening.”

“Just another day,” said Starkes. “If you believe the city officials and the press.”

More and more do not.

“It’s not going to stop,” said reader David Troutman to the Times News in Burlington. “Are we another Detroit in the making?”

“Once again the culture of violence continues,” added Chuck Spring.

But for every commentator like Chuck Spring looking for answers, someone like Becky Thompson is willing to provide them: Conservatives are to blame for the racial injustice that has created the tsunami of black mob violence around the country.

“Chuck Spring and once again, you could help by paying living wages and start voting for jobs instead of voting against the people that need jobs by voting tea party. Obama has had a jobs bill since I believe it was 2011 but the republicans and the tea party are not interested.”

This home invasion was not too different from a robbery and break in last July. A gang of black men robbed and assaulted a 79-year Burlington woman. Several of the men were eventually arrested and the victim said she would pray for them. She said she was thankful the men did not kill her.

Her Burlington neighbors were not quite as forgiving: “It took 7 of them to rob a 79 year old woman,” said one reader to the local Fox affiliate. “Shame, they’ll probably get a slap on the wrist…’My boy a good boy. He ain’t do nothin’.”

And where media outlets permit comments on racially charged crimes like this — some do, some do not — self-defense is a popular them. “Break-in on me?” asked a reader. “As soon as the pistol is in my hands you had better be out of my range.”

But no matter how bad the crime, no matter how often leniency and clemency are tried and found wanting, some insist we have to continue. Danielle Smith posted her reply to the “get tough” crowd at the Fox News outlet:

You seem to have little faith not only in our justice system but in humanity as a whole. Perhaps these criminals aren’t the only ones to blame (though they ARE very much in the wrong and SHOULD be punished), but who is there to help them stop? Who will take the time to help rehabilitate?

Some version of this question has been asked over and over for 50 years. With still no answer.

More and more people are turning for answers to Leshawn and Nkosi, whom we may condemn for racist violence, but applaud for their unflinching illuminating honesty.

The worst case of black mob violence you will see this week.

Cover4 high resIf you only watch one video of black mob violence this year, make it this one.

The scene: A Florida school bus in August of 2013. As beat downs go, maybe it was worse than average. Maybe not.

But if you look at other cases like this — and cases far, far, worse — they are described far less dramatically.

Beating? No, too judgmental.

More often than not, these beatings are described as scuffles. Melees. Brawls. Fights.

That way you do not have to worry about pinning the blame on anyone. Even if it is something like a mob of nine black people in Green Bay against 2 tourists who just happened to be cops.

That was a scuffle.

And the motivation for the beat down, if there is one? There are lots of those too: Poverty. Family. Neighborhood. Schools. Heck, I’ve even heard sidewalks.

But the videos change all that. We have two of this beating. The first from the back of the bus. There we see three fifteen year olds kicking, punching and stomping the hapless 13-year old.

The newscaster tells the other students were cheering. We also know from the video that the victim was the only white person on the bus. Including the bus driver.

The back of the bus video also shows us something that did not happen: No one helped. Sometimes what does not happen is more important than what does happen.

As Sherlock Holmes reminded us in the “dog that did not bark.”

Let’s go now to the front of the bus: The attack from the bus driver’s point of view. The victim is lying low, waiting to get off. We cannot hear if any words are exchanged.

WFLA-TV News Channel 8 By now we know at least one of the three attackers tried to sell him drugs earlier at school. The victim apparently told the school principal. As the bus stops, the white boy tries to leave. Then the violence begins. Punching. Stomping. Yelling. Screaming. All the while the bus driver is calling police for help. But not making any effort to rescue the child himself. This is a difficult video to watch. But if you, please look at the predators doing the beating. Now answer a few questions: Was it the poverty? Was it the poor schooling? Was it the lousy neighborhoods? How about lack of jobs? Were they angry at the stop and frisk policy? Was it for Trayvon? Or is this violence on another level? A whole different scenario than the usual antiseptic accounts we read about in the daily papers buried in small stories on page 8? How many people are aware of this level and intensity and frequency of violence that happens every day? But ignore the victim? And only try to help us understand the predators that did this? Way way too many. And many of them working big city newsrooms and run big city police departments. There is a ton of this violence happening. And the only thing — THE ONLY THING — that makes this special is that we caught so much of it on video. Cover4 high res

Concerned.

But at the same time, happy that his station was breaking news by broadcasting some of the 911 calls about the July 4, 2013 riots in Chicago.

“Why are we just hearing about this now?” asked Johnson, an anchor at the CBS affiliate.

Short answer: Because you were not reading the White Girl Bleed a Lot web site. I heard it from Chicago cops. They heard it from Second City Cop. Another great web site.

I posted it the day after.

Way before Drudge posted it just a few hours ago.

Johnson’s question reminded me of an exchange I had with an editor when I worked for UPI. I had just written a story about how the San Diego Chamber of Commerce had named a portable greenhouse company as one of its Businesses of the Year.

Except for one thing: I reported the main business of the greenhouse company was selling products to people who used them to grow marijuana. I nailed it with lots of details from ads and employees.

So the Big Editor from UPI calls me. Let’s just say UPI was not known for breaking stories.

He asks: “If this is a story, why haven’t I heard about it?”

Think about that for a while.

Let’s get back to Rob Johnson and see if we can help him out. This is not the first time I have generously offered to help the working stiffs that report the news in Chicago all day.

Back to the present.

So the reporter goes over some of the 911 calls, and broadcasts a minute or two of actual conversation.

  Here’s the thing about 911 calls: They can be pretty raw. Dispatchers often ask about the race of the perpetrators — as in the case of George Zimmerman most famously down in Florida. And sometimes callers just say it: As was the case at the Wisconsin State Fair race riot. FROM SECOND CITY BLOG:

The fireworks downtown were a complete disaster again tonight, but I’m sure we’ll all hear about what a smashing success it was tomorrow morning. The terrorists were running around in large packs with multiple citizens relating that these cannibals were throwing M80′s at the good citizens that were actually willing to spend their hard earned money in crime ridden Chicago. Not only were the groups throwing explosives at people, but it wouldn’t be a weekend in downtown Chicago unless they conveniently renowned iphone and handbags from their owners. My favorite part of the evening was when a sergeant asked the officers stationed at the Oak Street Beach entrance at Michigan avenue to push back the group to prevent then from reaching the beach, the officer calmly stated “there’s only me and one other officer, so I don’t think that’s happening.” What a circus. Besides creating general havoc in every corner of the district they pummeled good citizens, looted numerous convenience stores, were throwing fireworks at families, fighting everyone that got in their way and stripped countless individuals of any valuables they carried. Don’t recall any shootings but did hear of a few stabbings. Complaining of a lack of manpower is fruitless at this point. The vermon has taken over the Mag Mile and surrounding area and all we can do to protect the citizenry and tourists is to strongly suggest that they DO NOT come downtown! Then followed up by another great news source in Chicago doing ten times the work — quantity and quality — with 1/100 the resources. Teen Busted for Terrorizing Tourists On Michigan Avenue – The Loop – DNAinfo.com Chicago Shedrick was walking through Water Tower Park, between Pearson Street and Chicago Avenue, with several other men and women Friday evening when he loudly screamed, “F— the police,” according to court records. Shedrick then ran onto Michigan Avenue, jumping and flailing his arms in the middle of traffic. When police officers told him to stop, Shedrick responded, “F— you. You ain’t so tough. Say it in my face,” records state. The teen then headed West on Chicago Avenue, this time on the sidewalk, but still flailing his arms and jumping side to side. Pedestrians were forced off the sidewalk and into the street with traffic by his behavior, according to court records. Shedrick was arrested just before 10 p.m. Friday.

It was about ten minutes into the fireworks displays on a lake shore crowded with families, seniors, and strollers, when Gary Dailey began noticing a large group of people who were “screaming and yelling and scaring everybody,” Dailey said. Dailey said “everybody was getting uncomfortable” including himself and he became one of many who began moving away from them, Dailey said. Dailey said his intention was to go underneath the tunnel and watch them from the other side of the street. But there was a problem. There were about 40 people backed up in the tunnel, including a rowdy group that was “roughhousing in the center of the tunnel,” Dailey said.

This was actually the beginning of a pretty good story about how the brother of a cop chased one of the predators and caught him. Returning property to his victim and sending him to the hoosegow. But that story would come later. This story was business as usual: No context. No nothing. Cue the columnists about how it is our fault for not providing better schools, better housing, better jobs, better sidewalks, better parking. As for the police brass: Isolated. Not much happening. All under control. You know the drill.     BUT THAT IS NOT THE END OF THE STORY. NOT QUITE.
