Letter from the Bronx.
Mr. Flaherty,
I just finished reading, “White Girl Bleed A Lot” and, “Don’t Make The Black Kids Angry.”
Thank you for your good work and those two excellent books. It’s not a funny subject yet you managed to inject humor into the terrible reality of today’s black and white race relations albeit (intentional pun alert) black humor.
I qualify my sincere thanks for your good work with, “sort of” because before reading about the blood and anger that makes up much of our current black and white racial divide I was going through life in a pleasant racial slumber. “White Girl” and “Black Kids” have forever interrupted my sleepy racial dream and awakened me to the nightmare of what’s really going on right before my eyes.
I’m a 56 year-old married white guy living in Southern California, 60 miles north of Los Angeles. My wife and I have lived in Oxnard, California since 1986 where we have had the good fortune of avoiding any crime or race-related problems in our lives. It wasn’t always that way for me. I grew up in the Bronx in the 1960s and 70s where my dad drove a New York City bus and my mom stayed at home to raise too many (9) kids. Being of Irish Catholic persuasion, I attended catholic schools in the Bronx where with the unspoken backing of my parents, the Nuns taught me a thing or two about discipline and respect for the rules. I did my share of acting foolish in grade school but when I did, sister Mary Ellen and her holy squad of peacekeepers nipped it in the bud quite quickly. One incident which was a turning point in my young career as a wannabe class clown was when one of the Nuns gave me an especially effective whack on the side of the head after I’d been disrupting the class. I couldn’t wait to get home to tell my mom about how the nun mistreated me. I had vengeance on my mind. My mom was always my number one fan and I was sure she’d take my side and educate that nun about my wholesomeness and purity. As soon as I got home I blurted it out to my mom. However, I didn’t quite finish my first sentence before my mom turned my entire worldview on its’ end. I said to my protector and advocate, “Ma…the nun in home room smacked me because…” Before I knew it, I got a solid, open fisted, right back-hand across the right side of my face. My mom followed up with these words forever burned into my frontal lobe, “you must’ve been doing something wrong. KNOCK IT OFF!” I think I was in 4th or 5th grade at the time. I’m not that smart but thanks to my mom, I was able to quickly figure out my behavioral options. I quickly understood that I could goof off in class and take the beating from the nuns but I sure as heck couldn’t go home and whine about it to my mom. Discipline Problem Solved. Class clown career ended.
While all that was going on, my dad was living the racial realities of 1960s New York City from the viewpoint of the windshield of a city bus. I remember him coming home one day after his shift, his uniform shirt torn to shreds and several bloody fingernail slash marks down the sides of his face. A black woman had tried to get on his bus without paying the fare (a common occurrence among black NYC bus passengers in those days according to my dad). My dad immediately called her on it at which point she went ballistic and viciously attacked him. Being seated with a cross-bar between him and his female attacker put him at a distinct disadvantage. Still, he was a wiry dude and managed to get up into the aisle of the bus where he promptly knocked the b*tch unconscious. He then dragged her limp body off the bus and deposited her free-ridin a** on the sidewalk. Upon re-entering the bus, he was greeted with loud cheers of approval. I guess that’s one big difference between then and now. Today, he probably would’ve been stabbed to death by the other people on the bus. Today the correct answer would likely be, “free bus passes for the baby mommas.”
In another 1960s New York City bus incident involving my dad and a young black male passenger, my dad was coming to the end of the line of his bus route on 3rd Avenue where he would make a wide sweeping turn and restart the route in the opposite direction. It was late at night and there was only one passenger on the bus… the young black male. As the bus approached the turnaround point, the black male came to the front of the bus and pulled out a knife. My dad was a quick thinker. He made like he was pulling into the bus stop but then cranked the steering wheel hard to the left while at the same time hitting the lever to open the bus doors. As he did so, he slammed the gas pedal to the floor. The bus lurched up hard to the left and the would-be fare collector flew out the front door and as my dad put it, “cracked his noggin on the curb.” My dad said his thought at the time was, “last stop a**hole.” Mission accomplished. As my dad turned the bus around he glanced about the empty environs and noticed a police officer step out of a dark doorway. My dad made eye contact with the cop. The cop saw the guy fly out of the bus and smack his head on the curb. The cop looked at my dad and gave my dad a “thumbs-up.”
Eventually, by 1976 the crime in our once blue-collar Castle Hill Avenue Bronx neighborhood was too much for my parents. We were one of the last hold outs on our block. Our house at the corner of Seward Avenue and Havemeyer Avenue had been burglarized, black kids from the projects were in the habit of throwing rocks at people’s houses on our block, a girl had been raped a few blocks away, and a dude was stabbed to death on the next block over. Done. My parents booked us all tickets on White Flight Airlines. We moved to the suburbs… Tarrytown on the Hudson in Westchester County.
Your books brought back my Bronx experiences into full relief. My gut reaction while reading your books was, “been there, done that” until I realized that what I experienced growing up in the Bronx was tame by today’s vicious standards and that the black hatred for whites is entirely widespread throughout our country.
So again… thank you… sort of… at least now after having read your books I know the reason behind much of the societal ills in this country… it’s me… I’m white and by society’s definition, racist. It’s all my fault. My only complaint is that it’s not fair that I have no one to blame for my sins so… I’ll blame the nuns.
