I thought this was an urban legend: In California, it is illegal to give a black child an IQ test.
But its true.
Even liberals have a hard time dealing with that.
So this podcast we are going to go out of our lane a bit, and present a chunk of a podcast from Radio Lab about IQ and race.

As a 26 year Bay Area cop, I must say you are so spot on about how bogus implicit bias and de escalation “training” is. The anti bias training is gaslighting and the de escalation training is just part of the fantasy.
It is a tool used against cops when they defend themselves from assault, like with most crimes, it is the victim’s fault, he or she should have ‘de escalated’ the situation. If they didn’t or couldn’t; they deserved it…
As a big sports fan, I ride BART to A’s, Raiders and Warriors games. You are also right on in your understanding of how BART is.
Maybe you know this but just in case, I’ll explain why Police Chiefs in California talk the way they do. Cops’ jobs are protected by civil service rules and it is hard to fire them. But, CA Chiefs are ‘at will’.
In CA labor law this means they can be fired without the protections of civil service procedure. In other words, if their style does not match their boss’, city council or city manager, they can be terminated. Therefore, they are always one press release away from unemployment.
Meanwhile, in CA county, sheriffs are elected. They can only be removed by being voted out of office. They really report to no one. They are on equal rank with the county board of supervisors. Therefore sheriffs tend to still talk like cops and say what is on their mind.

Colin… I’m originally from Cleveland Ohio. I moved out to the Bay Area just for the fun of it. I suppose you really need to do a story on Vallejo California. There are more property crimes than you can possibly imagine.
I’ve brought this up before I just drove a 2017 Hyundai Sonata off the lot a few weeks back. 4 days after I drove it off the lot I was at work which is literally across the street from the police station on Amador Road on camera in broad daylight like I said across the street from the police station both of my passenger windows were shattered so that they can grab my backpack which was on the floor of the car it may be contained $50 worth of valuables but the backpack was sentimentally priceless.
I called nine-one-one they will not even come out to take a report!! When I went to the police station across the street where the crime occurred and went up to ask for an officer to take my report I was told in no uncertain terms that my report would not be filed.
I exclaimed that I needed it for insurance purposes – they decided at that point to inform me that I could receive a copy of a police report but I would have to type it up myself – you cannot make this kind of nonsense up!!!
Go to Vallejo PD website I would post it but it’s very easy to find you can literally type up your own police report which will of course never be looked at and is only to be used for insurance and of course because an actual officer did not type the report my insurance denied me the claim.
This car is brand new and I’m already violated with the suspects on video tape no masks just hoodies the faces were clearly identifiable and the police did nothing… Absolutely nothing.
Someone needs to shine a light on this rat hole it’s worse than Oakland!!! Colin I will give you my personal cell phone number I will give you my email, I will give you whatever you want but please for the love of God shine a light on this stink hole of a city – it is quite gentrified Hispanics Asians whites and of course the victimized African Americans.
It’s unreal and I would feel Vindicated if you did a story or at least gave a nod please let me know if you ever decide to I know you get so many stories every day but Vallejo has a special place in my heart not necessarily a good place but a very special place.
Please pretty please do some type of story on the city I’m sure you can find enough information and if you cannot I will direct you. Thank you in advance.

Hi Colin,
A little story. I was staying with my 88 year old mother in Bellflower, CA and one morning about 7:30 she saw two teenage black girls walking a dog and they had stopped in front of her house to let the dog do his business on her lawn.
She told me what was going on and decided to open her door and confront them.
I told her that wasn’t a good idea, but she did it anyway.
She was really taken back by being call a “white b*tch” and told “f*ck you “, etc. She’s originally from Mississippi, so her southern accent didn’t help much.
She grew up in the old South of the 40’s and 50’s but has lived in California for 65 years.
She was quite shaken up.
Anyway, a couple of days later we got toilet paper all over the yard and her magnolia tree.
I told her that we got off easy and that was their way of getting us back. Next time don’t confront them, I would just clean up the dog poop and we would just let it go.
After all, we don’t want to make the black kids angry.

I just finished reading, “White Girl Bleed A Lot” and, “Don’t Make The Black Kids Angry.”
Thank you for your good work and those two excellent books. It’s not a funny subject yet you managed to inject humor into the terrible reality of today’s black and white race relations albeit (intentional pun alert) black humor.
I qualify my sincere thanks for your good work with, “sort of” because before reading about the blood and anger that makes up much of our current black and white racial divide I was going through life in a pleasant racial slumber. “White Girl” and “Black Kids” have forever interrupted my sleepy racial dream and awakened me to the nightmare of what’s really going on right before my eyes.
I’m a 56 year-old married white guy living in Southern California, 60 miles north of Los Angeles. My wife and I have lived in Oxnard, California since 1986 where we have had the good fortune of avoiding any crime or race-related problems in our lives. It wasn’t always that way for me. I grew up in the Bronx in the 1960s and 70s where my dad drove a New York City bus and my mom stayed at home to raise too many (9) kids. Being of Irish Catholic persuasion, I attended catholic schools in the Bronx where with the unspoken backing of my parents, the Nuns taught me a thing or two about discipline and respect for the rules. I did my share of acting foolish in grade school but when I did, sister Mary Ellen and her holy squad of peacekeepers nipped it in the bud quite quickly. One incident which was a turning point in my young career as a wannabe class clown was when one of the Nuns gave me an especially effective whack on the side of the head after I’d been disrupting the class. I couldn’t wait to get home to tell my mom about how the nun mistreated me. I had vengeance on my mind. My mom was always my number one fan and I was sure she’d take my side and educate that nun about my wholesomeness and purity. As soon as I got home I blurted it out to my mom. However, I didn’t quite finish my first sentence before my mom turned my entire worldview on its’ end. I said to my protector and advocate, “Ma…the nun in home room smacked me because…” Before I knew it, I got a solid, open fisted, right back-hand across the right side of my face. My mom followed up with these words forever burned into my frontal lobe, “you must’ve been doing something wrong. KNOCK IT OFF!” I think I was in 4th or 5th grade at the time. I’m not that smart but thanks to my mom, I was able to quickly figure out my behavioral options. I quickly understood that I could goof off in class and take the beating from the nuns but I sure as heck couldn’t go home and whine about it to my mom. Discipline Problem Solved. Class clown career ended.
While all that was going on, my dad was living the racial realities of 1960s New York City from the viewpoint of the windshield of a city bus. I remember him coming home one day after his shift, his uniform shirt torn to shreds and several bloody fingernail slash marks down the sides of his face. A black woman had tried to get on his bus without paying the fare (a common occurrence among black NYC bus passengers in those days according to my dad). My dad immediately called her on it at which point she went ballistic and viciously attacked him. Being seated with a cross-bar between him and his female attacker put him at a distinct disadvantage. Still, he was a wiry dude and managed to get up into the aisle of the bus where he promptly knocked the b*tch unconscious. He then dragged her limp body off the bus and deposited her free-ridin a** on the sidewalk. Upon re-entering the bus, he was greeted with loud cheers of approval. I guess that’s one big difference between then and now. Today, he probably would’ve been stabbed to death by the other people on the bus. Today the correct answer would likely be, “free bus passes for the baby mommas.”
In another 1960s New York City bus incident involving my dad and a young black male passenger, my dad was coming to the end of the line of his bus route on 3rd Avenue where he would make a wide sweeping turn and restart the route in the opposite direction. It was late at night and there was only one passenger on the bus… the young black male. As the bus approached the turnaround point, the black male came to the front of the bus and pulled out a knife. My dad was a quick thinker. He made like he was pulling into the bus stop but then cranked the steering wheel hard to the left while at the same time hitting the lever to open the bus doors. As he did so, he slammed the gas pedal to the floor. The bus lurched up hard to the left and the would-be fare collector flew out the front door and as my dad put it, “cracked his noggin on the curb.” My dad said his thought at the time was, “last stop a**hole.” Mission accomplished. As my dad turned the bus around he glanced about the empty environs and noticed a police officer step out of a dark doorway. My dad made eye contact with the cop. The cop saw the guy fly out of the bus and smack his head on the curb. The cop looked at my dad and gave my dad a “thumbs-up.”
Eventually, by 1976 the crime in our once blue-collar Castle Hill Avenue Bronx neighborhood was too much for my parents. We were one of the last hold outs on our block. Our house at the corner of Seward Avenue and Havemeyer Avenue had been burglarized, black kids from the projects were in the habit of throwing rocks at people’s houses on our block, a girl had been raped a few blocks away, and a dude was stabbed to death on the next block over. Done. My parents booked us all tickets on White Flight Airlines. We moved to the suburbs… Tarrytown on the Hudson in Westchester County.
Your books brought back my Bronx experiences into full relief. My gut reaction while reading your books was, “been there, done that” until I realized that what I experienced growing up in the Bronx was tame by today’s vicious standards and that the black hatred for whites is entirely widespread throughout our country.
So again… thank you… sort of… at least now after having read your books I know the reason behind much of the societal ills in this country… it’s me… I’m white and by society’s definition, racist. It’s all my fault. My only complaint is that it’s not fair that I have no one to blame for my sins so… I’ll blame the nuns.

Hi Colin.
Before moving from California I would never have believed all of the crap that is going on, well I would have found it difficult to believe anyway.
But after living in Virginia, I am a believer!
I never could have imagined an entire community who bully and brutalize yet flip flop and play the victim. I was horrified upon (quickly) finding out that they not only think this way but have all the support necessary to do so.
It is a horrible realization to find that there is no justice for you, based on the color of your skin. And that doing the right thing, abiding by the law etc. is frowned upon.
Living in an all-black neighborhood, I am called names; people yell racial slurs at me when I walk out my door. Upon calling the police one night I was shocked to have a potbellied black officer screaming at me for living here, and telling me to “Look around!” and “You Don’t belong!”
I complained to his Sgt. and the local PD Lt. But they were not surprised and, predictably, they would not consider it a hate crime. Same went for my neighbors who were calling me racist names. But I don’t give up as easy as some around here do, that’s just not me!
I finally got them to address the issue with my racist neighbors and they now shut the hell up when I am outside my home. No, I don’t feel safe here by any means, but in having a big city background and having once been a security guard, I won’t go down easily. I feel like if they are going to get me they will get me. I cannot live in fear, and I will never have to worry about having any false sense of security. People are killed in places where it never happens because they feel so safe they leave their doors unlocked. I will never leave anything unlocked or without an alarm.
My kids are grown up and live out of state, which is good because there is NO WAY I would raise children in this environment.
I often wonder if America has lost its mind. Being an optimistic Hippie I tend to think that people will come to their senses, only to be let down over and over again.
I grew up in the Bay Area so I have always believed in justice and everyone’s rights. But I cannot get on board with the current plan for Black exemption from the law, and redistribution of wealth.
Many days I wonder to myself “How stupid are some people” and “What is going on!”
Time was I felt like, in talking to people I could change some minds; help them to see equality, diversity and injustice. But this; Blacks taking over and killing people, then blaming whites stuff should never have taken off like it has.
I have gotten long winded, but remember that it is always darkest before the dawn. And things have to hit rock bottom. I hope we are there soon.
The reason why I believe this is that without handing it to them and stepping back, as many of us have. they will never see it. They want to blame white people, but now they seem more in charge than ever so how is that possible?
America has to be getting tired of it! And the fact that even some of their own people are turning on them helps me to see a light at the end of the tunnel.
You see the problem with the blatant lying that people who do NOT value education is, that it all falls apart as they cannot pull it off and don’t know why.
Americans are resilient, and no one likes to be lied to. So letting them lie then when the truth comes out is why Obama is the most hated president, and I was afraid no one would ever see that.
Showing their true colors (or their asses) and exposing the truth is the only way things are ever going to change. So keep doing what you are doing, and eventually the undeniable proof will prevail. Then we can watch them squirm because blacks will never be able to go back to that complete/total victimhood and white shaming comfort they once enjoyed.
Placing no value on education will be to their detriment as their numbers grow, and they use physical violence. They can and will be outsmarted. And will likely do it to themselves.
So keep it up! Let’s continue to fight the good fight! We will not be alone, because the tide is already turning.
Here is the problem when you demand attention, you get it!
Though many of us will never get over what blacks have tried to do, and we may never learn to live together in peace and harmony, the change is coming. And we can’t go back, so look ahead.
We shall overcome!

My mom, brother, two cousins and I were shot at by a black man who was a felon in possession of a fire arm. He shot off 30 rounds only hitting one of us (my cousin) in his ankle. With 4 counts of attempted homicide he is still walking the streets of Ogden Utah. I was threatened with my life if I testified. I ended up move to California for a year just to escape his friends finding me. I now carry a .40 m&p shield to protect my kids and I.
My first encounter with black people, Monterey California 1986-87. Fort Ord (we are a military family) three black boys older than me I was 11 almost 12 this was middle school. They said I called them something but I never heard the word they used before and I asked what that meant. Well the word was coon and when I asked what it was the one behind me pushed me calling me cracker (again a word I didn’t understand the meaning of) then the other boys decided it was fight time. Well my dad was a great teacher and those kids ended up getting hurt and I got suspended for racial incitement and using a weapon to do bodily harm. I never met these kids before in my life it was my first meeting with them but I was removed from the school they got to stay. The school I was in before that. I was a an A student won first place in science class, involved in the class body A-typical nerd stuff. I have many stories of this kind of crap cause I’m a half breed, Mexican and white. Two weeks later the big brother of these kids came knocking at my door told my dad he was there to kick my ass. This boy was 4 years older and pretty big. My dad is a Marine yes he showed me how to fight and use my surroundings needless to say that kid never came back but his momma did all loud when see got a look at me 4′ 100 lbs she stopped looked at her boys and told them “don’t you be messin’ wit dem white boys no mo dey cooked” we are crooked because we protect ourselves when overwhelming circumstances arise and that’s considered crooked to them.
My family is colored I have blood family that is black they never treated me this way and never used words like that to each other. I never heard them say nigga to each other.
Sorry for taking your time. I have more details for this if ever you’d like to hear. The reversed racism went on for the rest of the year had to stay home from school because it got bad. I still get shit for being light skinned. It’s made me hate dark people I stay around only white because I’m afraid I’ll get killed by one. Also the black man that tried to shoot me was a family friend that decided he wanted to disrespect my mother calling her a b*tch in her house then telling her to shut the f*ck up as she told him to leave while pulling a knife on her. I place my hand on my gun told him he needs to leave before bad stuff happened. Walk it off get sober we can laugh about it tomorrow. He said okay but gave me a look like I’ll be back… 30 rounds ten minutes later and he still not in jail. Go figure.

Here’s your story… 1974 Pasadena CA “integration begins”, I am 14 year old and white kid. Black students from the other side of town are bused in to Pasadena High School, home of the “Bull Dogs”. Well there’s a new bulldog in town.
Every day a gym I’m getting ruffed up big time, I don’t know how to fight or want too! I’m Italian… I’m a lover.
Long story short Colin I became Pasadena High School’s “Iron Cross Man” in gymnastics 4 years running to get away from the black violence that was perpetrated on me daily. Frankly I didn’t even like gymnastics!

Dear Colin,
There aren’t any words to describe how I feel after reading many of the experiences that are similar to mine.
We moved to “sunny California” from the south side of Chicago. We moved to a predominantly black neighborhood.
My sister and I were tortured on the way to school and at school.
One day this boy, who was two times bigger than I was (I’m small even now as an adult), punched me in the face! (I’m a girl!!!) I grabbed onto his shirt to keep myself from falling down the stairs.
As my eye was swelling and tearing up where I could no longer see, we were both sent to the office.
When I began to explain that this BIG man- looking boy punched me out of nowhere, the boy jumped in and said I had ripped his shirt! The BLACK male principal waved both of us away!
I had a black eye and swollen face, all the other students just laughed about how funny I looked.
