WhiteGirl_wtih_Badge_R14New: Being White in Baltimore.

Remember Being White in Philly last year? The article about how racial violence was an every day fact of life in the city of brotherly love?

Mayor Nutter said the article was “despicable.”

Now we have a redux, this time in Baltimore.

A preview of an article at WND:

Black History Month in Baltimore is a busy, busy time.  Every aspect of black life in this city is remembered and celebrated:  Black schools. Black trains. Black music. Black movies. Black churches. Black literature.  Black clothing. Black politicians, like the last two mayors.

Much like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday celebration in January. And Kwaanza the month before that.

Then Tracey Halvorsen had to go and spoil it all: She wrote an article about crime in Baltimore. How she and her mostly white neighbors live in fear. And no one seems to care. Or worse, lots of people think it is normal.

This Baltimore business woman let it all hang out in an article that is going viral called “Baltimore City,You Are Breaking My Heart,” for an on-line magazine called Medium.com. A few quotes:

“I’m tired of being looked at like prey.”

“I’m tired of thinking about the horrifying final moments for 51 year old neighbor, Kim Leto, stabbed to death in her own home by two teenagers.”

“I’m tired of wondering why city leaders haven’t said shit about recent horrific murders committed by children in supposedly “safe” neighborhoods.

“I’m tired of living next to a beautiful park that I’m scared to walk into at any time of day, thanks to regular stories of day-time muggings, drug dealing and gang violence.”

Much like a similar article last year, “Being White in Philly,” this story contained all the requisite apologies. All the protestations about her black friends. All the denials that she was a racist.

That did not change one fundamental fact: Crime in Baltimore is a black thing. And black on white crime is a secret that is simply not discussed. Other than to excuse it as a product of white racism, that is.

As indictments go, Halvorsen’s was pretty mild. She left out the dozens and dozens of examples of black mob violence documented in Baltimore alone in  White Girl Bleed a Lot: The Return of Racial Violence and How the Media Ignore It.

In 2012, this violence became so bad that Maryland State legislator Pat McDonough asked the Governor to declare a “No-Travel” Zone around the downtown Inner Harber area. McDonough said he wanted to “prevent the consistent and dangerous attacks upon citizens by roving mobs of black youths.”

Yes, he really said that. There was more: “ St. Patrick’s Day witnessed another out-of-control incident involving hundreds of young people in a mob-like posture, fighting among themselves, and attacking innocent tourists and visitors to the harbor area.” A video of that beating and subsequent violence went viral and was seen by millions around the world.

McDonough saw an episode of black mob violence at the Inner Harbor while downtown with his wife.

Some of the violence is on video: Over the summer, just a few hours after a rally to protest the verdict in the trial over the killing of Trayvon Martin,  a black mob stalked and attacked a restaurant worker on his way home.  They put him in the hospital with broken bones all over his face.

At a Baltimore skating rink, black mob violence involving hundreds of people has a been a regular feature of weekend festivities for years. Assaults, property damage, attacks on police: Surrounding businesses have been hit as well.

The dozens of examples of black mob violence connected to the rink range from throwing bricks through police car windows to vandalizing the Denny’s restaurant next door. The violence includes beating clerks and stealing merchandise from a nearby convenience store, fighting with police, jumping on cars – breaking window and ruining paint – and much, much more:

Amber Ruth was caught up in one of the periodic spasms of violence where hundreds of “children” walk in the street, stop traffic, destroy property – and worse. Says Ruth to the plucky Patch newspaper:

“I was on my way home on a Friday night around 9:30pm and they shut down Skate Land at Putty Hill because of fighting and those little hoodlums busted out my back window with me sitting in my car when i was stopped at the light in at Rossville blvd & BelAir Rd.”

This is a very long list. But last summer it got so long that one of the largest employers in Baltimore, T. Rowe Price, threatened to move its headquarters out of downtown if the violence continued.

T. Rowe Price is still there: But more and more people like Halvorsen are deciding the old world charm, parks, and natural beauty are just not worth it anymore. Not if you have to worry about violence every day, everywhere you go. Not if friends have to borrow your pit bull for a stroll through the neighborhood.

Some of the black mob crime is aided by city officials. Last year, 13 guards were indicted for their role in allowing inmates who were members of the Black Guerilla Family gang to take over day to day operations of the Baltimore City Detention Center.  The guards, many of whom were women, allegedly “had become romantically involved with certain gang members—who smuggled drugs, cellphones, and other illicit material into the jail for the gang’s benefit,” said Slate.

The inmates are running the asylum.

The Baltimore Sun has been a leader in ignoring, condoning and denying the black mob violence and black on white crime. It led the effort to condemn Pat McDonough for his comments about violent black mobs. When it does report racial violence, it is only to dismiss it.

But racial violence came home to the Sun in January. One of its editors, John Fogg, was attacked when he was getting out of his car and heading for his house just a few blocks from Hlaversen’s.  His skull is fractured in six places. He lost 10 teeth.  The black suspect,  in custody, was recently arrested for two other assaults, but charges were dropped before the case came to trial.

That might have been Halversen’s tipping point: Like the “Being White in Philly” article, Halversen’s story is provoking what one observer called “one big group therapy dialogue — with every major media site in the city running stories on it.

Critics of the article are breaking down along racial lines: Many of the white commentators said race had nothing to do with crime in Baltimore.

The black commentators disagreed: They said crime had everything to with race: The white privilege that caused her to notice. The white racism that caused the black people to commit the crimes and violence.

“I think the problem here is that many white and/or upper/middle-class residents of Baltimore—and, of course, the Maryland suburbanites who work or play in Baltimore—show no sense of the structural problems plaguing the city and the roots of violence,” said Shereen at a local blog that focuses on journalism and music operated by NPR reporter Lawrence Lanahan.

Lanahan says its time to give some tough love to the white people in Baltimore who notice — and do not like –crime.

“It’s tough to talk about white privilege in the face of crimes like the ones Halvorsen cites, with innocent victims killed and badly injured and stunned families left to grieve,” Lanahan said.  “There’s also a lot that goes on, from individual decisions to local, state, and federal policy, that ensures–whether intentionally or not–that all the social ills stay where they “belong” in the neighborhoods that people like Halverson and, frankly, I won’t live in.

White neighborhoods get “more resources, than black neighborhoods” Lanahan said. That disparity somehow causes violence, he said.

The Medium news site published a push back a few days later: “What breaks my heart is when someone says they are tired of looking at black youth in the city as potential predators, as if they are the ones at fault,” said Tim Barnett. “What breaks my heart is when someone acknowledges the sadness of the death of a white woman, but does not acknowledge the sadness of the bleak lives of 2 young black men.”

Two young black men have been arrested in the recent home invasion and murder of Kim Leto, also close to Halversen’s home.

Salon published a piece from a college professor who said he and his friends were too poor to worry about what was happening to middle class white people.

So far the Mayor of Baltimore, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, has not made comments similar to what the Mayor of Philadelphia said about “Being White in Philly.”  He said it was despicable.

But her point of view on crime is clear: Last year, when the Governor of Maryland suggested that Baltimore should put more cops on the street to fight a spike in visible and violent crime, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was having none of that.

“Returning to the days of mass arrests for any and every minor offense might be a good talking point but it has been proven to be a far less effective strategy for actually reducing crime,” Rawlings-Blake said in a statement to the Baltimore Sun.

During her tenure, arrests have gone down to 50,000 a year, compared to 100,000 in 2005.

One of the reasons police do not arrest more black people in the Baltimore area is because black juries are often reluctant convict black defendants. This observation of racial jury tampering comes from academic and legal studies such as “Jury Nullification, Race, and The Wire.” And from David Simon, creator of the Baltimore crime drama, The Wire, a veteran of 13 years on the cop beat for the Baltimore Sun.

Simon is the Hollywood uber-liberal who recently made a few headlines in the wake of the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin: “The season on African-Americans now runs year round,” he declared. “ If I were a person of color in Florida, I would pick up a brick and start walking toward that courthouse in Sanford.”

In his recent book, Homicide, A Year on the Killing Streets, Simon talks about racial jury nullification with unusual candor:

“As with every other part of the criminal justice machine, racial issues permeate the jury system in Baltimore,” Simon said. “Baltimore prosecutors take almost every case into court with the knowledge that the crime will be seen through the lens of the black community’s historical suspicion of a white-controlled police department and court system.”

“The effect of race on the judicial system is freely acknowledged by prosecutors and defense attorneys-black and white alike-although the issue is rarely raised directly in court.”

“Race is instead a tacit presence that accompanies almost every panel of twelve into a Baltimore jury room. Once, in a rare display, a black defense attorney actually pointed to her own forearm while giving closing arguments to an all-black panel: “Brothers and sisters,” she said, as two white detectives went out of their minds in the back row of the gallery, “I think we all know what this case is about.”

WhiteGirl_300x250_01Black mob violence in Macon: What’s race got to do with it?

Black mob attacks white family. Residents say race had nothing to do with it.

Ask anyone who ever took a statistics course if that is true. And by their answer, you will know if they were paying attention. or not.

John J. Owens is absolutely sure race had nothing to do with the reason why 30 black people attacked five white people, including a mom and a baby near Macon Georgia last week.

The alleged assailants and victims could have been any race. “Color doesn’t matter, only the “idiot factor” matters,” opined Mr. Owens. That means the rest is random.

Anyone who ever took — and passed — a course in elementary statistics might wander about why Mr. Owens is so willing to dismiss the race as a factor in the violence.

macon snowBecause the odds of 30 black people randomly attacking five white people — including the woman and child — are about the same as the odds of fully loaded jet liner crashing on your front lawn. Twice. On the same day. With your mom in the first plane. And your long lost brother in the second.

So: That is not to say its impossible. Just not likely.

Even so, lots of people in Macon are wondering why so many people are treading so lightly around the violence.

It started out with a snowball fight among 30 black people at the Warner Robins High School.  The kids were on a snow day. The Telegraph in Macon breaks it down, beginning with the woman who confronted a group of black people for throwing snowballs at her car:

“At that point someone hit her with a snowball, and part of the snowball landed on the baby. The woman’s husband then approached, asked the group to stop and was attacked, he said. He and two other men in the sledding group who came to his aid were assaulted. He said no one in the sledding group instigated physical contact.

“The victim said three of them, including himself, suffered concussions, and one had two cracked ribs. Members of the sledding group were white, and those involved in the snowball fight were black. He said the attackers yelled racial comments at them during the assault.”

Of course there were pictures. And laughing. WGAX TV news called it “a fight.”

White Girl Bleed a Lot -- Knockout Game edition

White Girl Bleed a Lot — Knockout Game edition

The pictures made their way to Facebook and Twitter, with the alleged assailants bragging and having a good old time recounting their snowy victory.

That is how the police cracked the case and arrested Shymalik Raekwon Mitchell and Terrell Antonio Boyd. Both 17 years old. They were charged with a variety of crimes including assault.

The victims are asking their names be withheld because they fear retaliation for themselves and their children, who still attend the school.

As police search for others in the photos that appear to be kicking, stomping, punching and beating the five white people, some of the residents want to let us know what the real problem and real solutions are.

“People get jumped everyday,” said Jon’Shea JS Jenkins on his Facebook page. “ The fact that there white means nothing.  It could’ve been a black guy an it would have been the same outcome some people need to get out of there feelings and mind there business this attack happened because somebody wasn’t minding there business if the police ask me to stop doing something guess what I do.

“But if Tom Dick or Harry ask me I’m gonna look at him like he smoking rocks. It wasn’t right what they did at all but you gotta learn to mind ya business sometimes!!”

And to all the white people in Macon who said these assaults were a racially racially motivated case of black mob violence, Rogue Carlos R Leader  has a reminder and a rejoinder: “The biggest group of terrorist on this planet is white people.”

This one won’t go away. The crime. The predator’s reaction. His family’s response. And what people are saying about it today.

From Milwaukee:

Here’s a video and a Preview of a story at WND.

I find and document a lot of black mob violence and black on white crime. But I miss more than I catch. And few are more disturbing than this crime, this court room scene, and what followed this week, three years later.

Seandell Jackson killed Nathan Potter in Milwaukee in 2009.  Jackson was a convicted felon who had shot someone a few hours before he shot Potter. For the same reason: Of course it was a robbery, but he told the judge he thought he was “having fun.”

Potter was college student at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. By all accounts a gentle soul. A free spirit.

A few hours before Potter’s execution, at least one person dialed 911 to report a couple of sketchy characters lurking around the neighborhood. There had been a robbery there the night before. It was Jackson and his friend. Police never showed.

Jackson and his friend were hunting for victims when they saw Potter leave a bar.  They stalked him, accosted him,  demanded money and killed him.

After the murder, police wondered if Potter’s “marijuana conviction” from two years before had something to do with it. It did not. But while Milwaukee police pondered what the 21-year old college student did to provoke a couple of thugs,  Jackson and his pal were on a bus to Mississippi, courtesy of Jackson’s family.

Jackson’s uncle eventually turned him in. During the questioning, the killer repeatedly referred to his victim as the “little white boy.”

It wasn’t much of a trial. And after the conviction, Jackson turned to Potter’s family and mocked them, scorned them, and cursed at them. His friends family did the same as the victim’s family sat in shock. Not once. Many times.

At sentencing a few months later, it was a repeat: Jackson tried to turn to Potter’s family, but he was restrained by deputies as his family wailed and cursed and berated Potter’s family. All on video.

“We hate you,” said a member of the killer’s family to Potter’s family. Potter’s brother is autistic, and now insists that every light in his house be on all the time. And he also wants all the windows removed.

It was so ugly, even three years after the sentencing, it still gets attention. In February 2014, syndicated radio host Doug Banks posted a news report that purportedly showed Jackson crying during the sentencing.

Lots of people said Jackson was not crying: He was dropping F bombs on the judge as deputies wrestled him to the floor. It was his family making all the noise about how they were going to miss him and how unfair it was.

Pretty crazy right?

No, the crazy starts now: In the comments section of the syndicated “urban” radio host Doug Banks web site, some of his listeners were happy that Jackson will never be released from prison. But others had a more curious reaction, along racial lines:

Cheree Y. Holley saw unfairness:  “What about trevon martin parents? What about them? mister zimmermen still stands by his word that he he was defended himself, i don’t condone what this man has done, will the martins ever get their justice for their son just like these parents did for theirs? “

Alice Tiller reminded everyone “of course black man kills a white he gets life zimmer killed a black kid nothing.”

Keith Mcdonald found wisdom in the words of Alice Tiller: “The inequity of the judicial system when it comes to black men is apparent. We did not invent the race card and ignoring the racist society that we live in will not help us. I agree that the young killer should be in jail for life. He had a chance in court to show remorse but he acted like a sociopath. But I agree with Alice Tiller…when a white man kills a black men there are tons of excuses.”

Selento Rockett found the underlying cause: Jackson really wanted a job.  But they would not let him have one.

“What was going on in that boys life that he felt the need to get a gun, go rob and shoot somebody? When there are no jobs (and black males are in the lead for being unemployed) and no education to compete for a job, the only other alternative is either to join the military or become an entrepreneur at something. What’s the popular occupations in low income black communities across this country? Drugs, guns (unregisterd), fastfood, and sex. They are killing us slowly and turning us back to slaves.”

Finally, Demond James  puts in all in perspective: “life for killing a white man, while a white man who killed an unarmed black teen in Florida gets off! Hell no!”

This week, the New York Times and  NPR are leading a pack of national journalists to Florida to cover the trial of a black man, Jordan Davis, killed by a white man Michael Dunn. They say it has similarities to the case of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman.

The national black weekly magazine Jet made it their cover story: “Is Your Child Next?”

But after documenting more than than thousand cases of black mob violence and black on white crime — many in White Girl Bleed a Lot: The Return of Racial Violence to America and How the Media Ignore It — I can tell you that for every one Jordan Davis, there are dozens and dozens and dozens of Nathan Potters.

WhiteGirl_300x250_01The New Civil Rights Anthem: Fight For Your Right To Party.

Troy, New York is the New Selma.

A preview of an article about a new kind of black mob violence.

The New Civil Rights Anthem: Fight For Your Right To Party.

By Colin Flaherty

Civil rights has a new troubadour. Pete Seeger is out. The Beastie Boys are in.

Gone are the pastors and protestors holding hands and singing We Shall Overcome. Sometimes at the business end of a fire hose.

In its place is a new spiritual: You Have To Fight For Your Right To Party. Usually accompanied by a cloud of marijuana smoke and whatever kinds of vodka Puff Diddy and 50 Cent are selling these days.

The new Selma is Troy, New York. Just outside of Albany. And the first shot was fired early Saturday morning a few weeks ago. Not with a bullet, but with a 911 call from a night club called Kokopellis.

“We need the Troy police at Kokopellis,” said the unidentified caller.  “We got a bar fight goin’ on here. It’s inside movin’ out. Someone got hit with a bottle.”

How many people are fighting? asked the operator.

“About a hundred.” That was around 2:30 a.m., just a few days after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, as NPR reminded us.

Then a bartender called 911 as well:  “I’m a bartender at Kokopellis, we need a few cops down here. We got like a ton of people fighting right now and our bouncers are getting punched in the face and everything.”

The “and everything” included getting hit with bottles and sprayed with pepper spray because the bouncers were trying to eject people from the club for smoking pot on the dance floor. But they did not want to go.

A word about Kokopellis: Most night clubs are easy to pigeonhole, mostly by their crowds. But lately a new kind of club is springing up: They try and do it all. Kokopellis is one of those. One night it will feature hip hop and attract a heavy black crowd. Another night, the DJ markets to gay people. They even have hookahs. The college kids love that.

And on and on.

But this night, videos show the crowd was mostly black. And they mostly did not like it when police arrived to the riot. The local paper called it “scuffle.” Some scuffle.

Most of the people were there to commemorate the shooting death of a local DJ one year earlier.

Police have since released the calls for help from the first responders: “They are throwing bottles at us,” said one cop. “Whoever is on their way better step it up.”

They did.  Videos show when cops arrived in bigger numbers soon after, they were met with defiance, physical resistance, pepper spray and someone even discharged a fire extinguisher at them. On video.

Outside, it wasn’t going any better. “Two of our officers were struck in the head by bottles,” said police captain John Cooney told News 10 in Albany. “One suffering a laceration with bruising to the head. A garbage can was thrown at one of our officers. And after glancing off him, went through the back window of one of our patrol cars.”

Before it was over, five people — all black — were arrested. Eight cops were injured, six went to the hospital.

Soon after the real riot ended, the virtual riot began. This was the riot that black ministers insisted had really happened: Cops were beating black people for no other reason than they could. And, oh yeah, they were a bunch of racists.

Cue the Al Sharpton wannabe, Pastor Willie Bacote, backed up by members of the Troy African American Pastoral Alliance. At a community meeting soon after, Bacote was upset at how the police were using excessive force to deny the black people of Troy their right to party. And he was not going to let that happen. Not on his watch.

The Albany Times Union recorded Paster Bacote’s insights for the record: “Race has to be on the table. We’ve got a lot of problems to deal with in our city,” said Bacote of the Missing Link AME Zion Church.

The Troy Record could not get enough of Bacote either. “We have had enough of these incidents here in the city of Troy that keep wanting us to meet like this,” said Pastor Willie Bacote. “We will not tolerate this any longer.”

Bacote was referring to the police responding to several emergency calls involving large scale violence. Not the drunk, high people who attacked the police when they showed up.

The Tory Record did not point this out, but as police riots go, this was pretty tame stuff: No fractured skulls. No broken arms. No dog bites. No billy club bruises. No bullet holes. No one died. Not like the old days.

One of the men allegedly involved in the brawl and who was later arrested for resisting arrest had a black eye.

The Troy  police just hauled several inebriated people off to jail who did not want to go. For Bacote, that meant it was time for the poor and oppressed black people of Troy, New York to go to the mattresses: “We will fight them on the battlefield of justice,” Bacote said.

By now its a familiar act. But fewer and fewer people seem to be buying it, if reader comments are any judge:

“Oh god. I wondered how long it would be before Bacote got his mug in the news demanding police leave black folks alone,” said one reader.  “The bar owners were trying to shut the bar down because stupid idiots decided they were going to smoke pot inside. The unruly patrons didn’t like being told to leave so they beat up a bouncer. The cops had to be called and the rest is history. Bacote, isn’t it time for you to head down south like you’ve been promising for years? Troy doesn’t need your here pulling your race card at every possible opportunity. We’re sick of it.”

Even the usually most dependable allies in this civil rights struggle had their doubts about this one:  “Incident At Kokopellis,” began the headline of an NPR story. “Finding Racism Where Some Say There Is None?”

It’s a start.

Baltimore finds a new way to attack black mob violence.

After a spike in black on white crime and black mob violence in Baltimore last summer, the Governor of Maryland suggested that the city needed to step it up.

The Mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, said pack sand. She did not believe in mass incarceration.

That is why under her watch, they have slashed the number of people arrested from 100,000 to 50,000.

Here’s the link and the article.

Rawlings-Blake says city won’t return to days of ‘mass arrests’ under O’Malley

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake released a statement this afternoon, saying her police department would not return to the days of “mass arrests” under Gov. Martin O’Malley’s tenure as mayor.

“Returning to the days of mass arrests for any and every minor offense might be a good talking point but it has been proven to be a far less effective strategy for actually reducing crime,” Rawlings-Blake said in a statement.

Recently, the governor has argued for increased arrests in Baltimore as a way to combat violent crime. O’Malley, who advocated zero-tolerance policing policies while mayor, says he is concerned that Baltimore has stalled in its crime-fighting efforts, emphasizing that arrests are only half of what they were during his time as mayor.

But Rawlings-Blake notes that homicides dropped under 200 in 2011, using a strategy of targeted arrests focusing on the most violent offenders.

About 50,000 people were arrested last year in Baltimore, compared with 100,000 in 2005 under O’Malley.

So far this year, only about 500 people have been arrested without charges, compared with more than 20,000 in 2005.

FULL STATEMENT OF MAYOR STEPHANIE RAWLINGS-BLAKE:

“While I appreciate Governor O’Malley’s concern about crime in Baltimore it’s simply inaccurate to suggest more arrests leads to less crime.  The fact of the matter is when Baltimore had more arrests under previous administrations the homicide rate and crime overall was much higher.  Mass arrests only led to more distrust in local communities which actually make it harder for police to do their job.  My Administration is focused on more targeted arrests of the most violent and repeat offenders while modernizing our police force.  Returning to the days of mass arrests for any and every minor offense might be a good talking point but it has been proven to be a far less effective strategy for actually reducing crime.  There is still more work to do, but we get there by working with communities not by making them feel under siege from mass arrests.”

Black on white crime in Minneapolis: Another home invasion murder.

Lots of black on white home invasion robberies and murders lately. Here’s one from Minneapolis. His family and friends begged him to move from his sketchy neighborhood.

He refused. Now he is dead. Victim on a man who broke into his house saying he was looking for help.

His girlfriend was outside.

Good Samaritan’s last act led to his death on Minneapolis’ North Side | Star Tribune

This was not the first time they were victims of black on white crime. But in this part of the world, that is considered normal. So it does not make the paper. And no one really raises a fuss about it.

Here’s an excerpt:

The stranger ran to the back door of Thomas Sonnenberg’s northMinneapolis house, screaming “Let me in! Somebody’s going to kill me!”

Sonnenberg, a 69-year-old retired technician known as a good Samaritan on his block, stepped outside, looked around and ushered the man inside, then was careful to lock the deadbolt.

At the stranger’s behest, he called 911. Moments later, Sonnenberg lay on the floor, with a bullet to the head, and the man he had sought to shelter from harm was attacking Sonnenberg’s 68-year-old wife.

Police arrived in time to interrupt the midday Friday assault in the small house in the 3700 block of Aldrich Avenue N., but they could do nothing for Sonnenberg, who died of the gunshot wound.

The home invasion and killing, as recounted Saturday by one of the Sonnenbergs’ daughters and by police reports, was the fulfillment of the family’s fears about the dangers the retired couple faced in their longtime home on the border of the Camden-McKinley neighborhoods.
