Letter from Crete-Monee.

I watched your podcast of From Savannah to Crete-Monee.
I am a resident of Crete.
I am curious of how you received the info submitted to you.
We have some serious problems in our district. Originally when the state of Illinois created our school district in the 50’s they combined 4 communities to form Crete-Monee school district. Crete, Monee, a very small section of Park Forest and University Park (formerly Park Forest South and originally Wood Hill). The communities were white until the mid 80’s. Home prices in Park Forest and Park Forest South were lower than Crete and Monee and blacks started to move in. Slowly at first. This caused the white flight that always occurs. University Park is now approx 92% black. Over 60% of the homes are rentals. There are several large apartment complexes also.
My great grandparents, as well as my husband’s, settled in Crete. We love our community and I’ve been fighting for it. Crete is now approximately 67% white. White flight of Crete happened around the late 90’s.
Here is where the problem lies. In the early 90’s, residents sued our school district for both segregation of the schools and the school board election process. They claimed University Park students were bused into Crete for high school, but white students were not bused into University Park. Also, residents from University Park could not get a seat on the school board because of the white communities not voting for them. In a federal lawsuit, they won the election issue, forcing our district to be divided into 7 subdistricts. The school board entered into a consensus agreement to bus Crete students into the jr high and all the schools were remapped. About 12 years ago, black residents became the majority of our school board. They made many policy changes. The discipline policy became lax. They removed holiday parties from our student’s lives. They systematically started to remove white administrators and replace them with black. Many statements have been made that black students learn better from black teachers than white.
Our teachers are scared. Most of our good teachers have left. They work each day with a looming fear that the ones still here will be replaced, and they are over the weakest accusation.
Present day. We have a school board (up until last week) that refused to expel students. We have a school (Monee Education Center) where students with behavioral problems can be “rehabbed” back into the high school to become functioning students. This entire school which can hold over 400 students has 32. They don’t even want the disruptive kids to attend there, because they are all black and it looks bad. The tax payers are paying a large staff at that school for 32 students. And now the videos are leaking to the press. The tv coverage you used in your podcast was just a small indication of what is going on. It’s been happening for years. I became a spokesperson fighting against the board 2 years ago. There was a day in February where 7 fights broke out, one between 3 girls (most of them are). My good friend is a teacher at the high school. As she tried to break up the fight she was pushed down and kicked in the ribs by a student.
Where does this rage come from? How is it possible that there is so little respect for authority and their school? I’m 47 years old. When I was a kid, you always heard “wait until after school” or “meet me on the playground”. I just cannot understand the anger these kids have inside.
What is my reason for this email?
We have a lot of work to do. I’ve worked for over 2 years to get people on the school board that can get us back on track. IL Senate Bill 100 is a disaster. When it goes into affect in September, it will be more difficult to get the problem kids out. But the system can still work.
Do you have any ideas what we can do to turn this around? And don’t tell me to move. I’m not ready for that yet.
