Letter from Charleston.

 

Colin:

 

I was stationed at Charleston AFB, SC, from the end of 1988 to the end of 1992. I had previously spent over four years living in a pleasant village in Mosel River wine country in Germany and of course Charleston was completely different. Large swaths of the city were dangerous black slums and it was best to stay out of them at all hours of the day and night.

 

Two incidents stand out in my mind. In one, a lone white kid around junior high school age was attacked by four or five black kids on a neighborhood street and beaten to death. They left his body in the ditch alongside the road. I think they killed him, in part, for his bike, and in part just because they felt like it.

 

In another incident, four black men kidnapped a young white woman and brought her back to a house in a black neighborhood where they took turns beating and raping her. The front door was open and everyone in the neighborhood walking by could see what was going on — and cheer them on. When they’d had enough fun they stabbed her and dropped her by the side of a road. She later died, but not before telling the police who her assailants were and where to find them. Naturally, when they were arrested, they justified their actions on account of “400 years of white oppression.” Oh, well, then I guess it was okay!

 

In neither case do I recall any national uproar. In fact, I doubt the news went far beyond Charleston because this was not very out of the ordinary. Also, few are interested in circulating stories of black-on-white crime (that doesn’t fit the narrative of “400 years of white oppression”), plus such stories might drive away tourist dollars.

 

Charleston is a big tourist destination, and tourism brings huge amounts of money into the local economy, so no one in the state or local government was interested in pointing out that Charleston was a dangerous place. They still aren’t.

 

You’ve probably read stories that crime rates are down all over the country. I doubt that’s true. As you’ve pointed out, government officials and businesses are not interested in chasing away tourist dollars, and businessmen don’t want businesses dollars leaving town because of crime awareness, so the truth is concealed all over the country.

 

There was something else I remember from the early 1990s, but this was in Florida (Miami?), not Charleston. A newly-arrived female German tourist left an airport car rental lot in a rented vehicle with her family and it wasn’t long before she was attacked by blacks when she stopped at a traffic light. What made this event more unusual was they beat the crap out of her and, after she collapsed on the street, they ran over her body as they drove off with her car, killing her. (Being beaten wasn’t unusual but getting run over was a bit over the top.) In the aftermath it was learned that such attacks were, and probably still are, very common. The perps knew there were tourists with money coming out of those rental lots and they deliberately targeted them. Someone checked with the local German consulate and learned that multiple victims of violent crime were coming in every day. Unfortunately for the Germans, who come from a tranquil country, no one told them that their vacation destination was so dangerous because no one wanted to chase off those tourist dollars.

 

As you say, this has been going on for a long time.

 

Recently you’ve published some correspondence by people describing their experiences growing up in the 1960s and 1970s. I grew up in northern Virginia, outside of DC, when busing was all the rage, and I think that was one of the big reasons my parents sent me to a parochial school — to keep me from being bused into DC in case the local politicians wanted to enact some “fairness” by shipping us into the District. That didn’t happen between VA and DC but my parents weren’t taking any chances with the politicians. I had a younger sister and my father knew very well what would happen to her in DC if she were dropped into that place.

 

In 1975 I enlisted in the Army and within months I was stationed in Germany (first tour). At one point I had a roommate in the barracks named Madden, a good, decent black guy, and I recall him telling me about when “Roots” was shown on TV and how the next day in his school the black kids were beating the living hell out of the white kids, even more than usual. Yes, this has been going on a long time.
