Letter from Oakland.
Dear Colin,
Thank you Colin for mentioning the BS rants and what not that pollute what many people understand is a serious topic. The subject matter is bound to draw some people seeking confirmation bias for their skewed perspectives, but the ‘without racism/rancor’ part is vital and should be respected; not doing so detracts from an important message.
I’m far from politically correct but ignorance is ignorance, no matter who it comes from and ignorance & intelligent discussion are oxymoronic. With that out of the way…
I’ve never really lived in a “white neighborhood,” most have been diverse working-class areas, but in all of the predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods I’ve lived in we were subject to some overt racial hostility but it was what it was, I never felt unsafe solely because we were some of the only white people so I wasn’t too concerned when we moved to Oakland.
I was proven wrong and as the only white family for blocks around the sting of disdain we felt there was on a different level. Granted I got along well with my direct neighbors and a lot of the random people didn’t seem to have issues with us, but by and large the residents and black business owners were not shy about letting us know we weren’t part of their community.
We moved when we could afford to, before my son was school-aged, and I’m not uncomfortable facing the reality that if we had stayed there the targets that our skin color put on our backs would’ve eventually gotten us hurt.
I won’t pretend to have solutions for the greater societal problems but my solution for my family is to live in places where my culture and my skin color doesn’t make it impossible to blend in and be part of the community.
I often encounter the type of people who intentionally move to or spend a lot of time in predominantly minority areas, like it shows how enlightened and w/o prejudice they are and its frustrating to not be able to get them to understand that they are engaging in risky behavior. More frustrating is when they make excuses for the perps after they’re victimized.
Same old story- people need to open their eyes to an uncomfortable reality.
