Letter: Talking about life experience.

Dear Colin,

Almost 30 years ago I was working in a construction and the company was hired to do some upkeep/maintenance on what I guess was Section 8 Low Income housing ( I was young so didn’t know much about Welfare, etc).

On the first day we dropped a small trailer with all the materials needed for the job and when we came back the next morning everything had been destroyed on the outside of that trailer. Lights. Tires, etc. (It was there for their benefit for Christ sake.)

We were there for a couple months in the summer and every Monday, my fellow workers and I were amazed at the trash in the parking lots and all throughout the community. (from that weekends house party I take it) Malt liquor bottles. KFC, Popeye’s, and Church’s food boxes, etc. (And I thought it was a stereotype)

Every Monday, the workers (white) from whomever manages this place were there cleaning it all up. Like clockwork, the next Monday, the same thing all over again. They crap where they sleep !!! Again, I was young and still very open minded and totally consumed with white guilt, I suppose.

But, after all these years, I am not sure what to think? Was it white privilege then as well? The things I would hear small children saying to each other was shocking. One small black boy said to a small young black girl, ” gurl, you better stop. Dont make me stick my ding ding in you!” They didn’t even appear to be school age yet.

I have never forgotten that in almost 3 decades now, and seeing this video, it is obvious not much has changed in the same community today. I have one question folks: AM I RACIST FOR TALKING ABOUT THIS LIFE EXPERIENCE?
