Letter from white people in a black neighborhood.
Hi Colin,
My brother moved to a gentrifying neighborhood in Stamford Ct… New condos built out of the rubble of torn down tenements.
We went to visit once…
I was on the terrace having a smoke, and saw about six fellas sitting on the porch of a wooden row house across the street. The way they were looking up at me, made me instinctively believe I was not welcome.
Back inside, I told my brother and his wife about it, and how I didn’t think it was a good move for him to live there..They brushed me off as being a bigot, and that they have had no problems in the two months they were there.
Well, fast forward about three weeks, and I get a call from him asking for help moving him out. Seems they broke down his door when they were at work, and cleaned him out.
He lived on the second floor, and when I arrived I saw he placed a 6×6 post against the front door, and the other end against the staircase. overkill anywhere else but the ghetto… Lucky to be alive.
