Letter from South Philly.
Hi Colin,
My mother recalls her days back in 1969 and 1970 in South Philadelphia living on the naval yard going to Edwin H. Vare Junior High School. She states around 75% of the school was black. This was claimed to be one of the “better” schools.
A friend of hers on the naval yard attended another junior high who claimed her own school was even safer because they “had cops in the schools patrolling everyday” — and also had a teacher stabbed in class. The friend later admitted being afraid of going to school.
The students in their grades were separated by “ability” groups. She occupied one of the higher ability groups. As the ability groups descended, it only got blacker.
The black kids out in the halls were always jumping around, shoving each other, harassing, threatening, and who knows what else as she claims to have “put on the blinders” and quickly weaved to class.
At day’s end, there were checkpoints at the exits to make sure you took all your books home. Black kids would take other people’s books, run past the checkpoint, and toss them aside afterwards. There were always fights breaking out between the girls every day in the school yards. Deadlier gang fights between older “teens” outside the school, she had the terrifying experience of being a witness to one.
The cafeteria was no different, despite being separated by gender, she tried to hide in corners away from the mobs of girls carrying on and throwing things. She says one of the meanest, toughest black girls in her grade, 7th, took a liking to her (rather her hair) and it kept her safe in there. The bathrooms? Every student in the school, she says, knew those were for the black kids cutting class only… use them at your own risk.
Approaching the assistant principal about her money being stolen, he commanded her never to bring money again as he had other problems, displaying a pile of steel bush combs, weapons at the time.
Here’s some sage advice from our town’s Daily News Record from March 3rd, 1990: JMU Student Maheni Thomas said, “I think the civil rights movement has decreased a bit. I think blacks are not showing the kind of aggression they should be.”
