Letter from the Omaha Projects.
Hi Colin,
I grew up in the projects and other black neighborhoods in Omaha Nebraska. On the surface you may think “Omaha” not a big city. But, North Omaha was very black and the birthplace of Malcom X.
I have 5 sisters and 2 brothers, my father was in prison on a manslaughter charge that is how we ended up in the projects. My first memory of the time was sitting on the stoop to our “house” and one of a group of old black women putting her cigarette out on my side.
I recall black men just forcing their way into our “house” and forcing an older sister into a closet beating her with a broom pole and raping her. We were very young but fought hard.
I recall jumping on the their backs and being thrown against a wall. I recall my older brothers being tied to a clothesline pole and beaten with rubber hoses.. I remember rhymes, “black paddy black paddy you don’t shine call me a White paddy I’ll beat your behind”.
I recall a neighbor woman (White, there were only 3 white families in the projects in our section). She had 5 children of her own. I remember one day sitting at her kitchen table and a black man standing in the doorway to the inside.and hearing a loud bang, the man had shot her in the neck. I remember that well because while she was in the hospital her children stayed with us.
Among us we only had one phone so when we needed the police we had a way of pounding on the walls to the the phone owner know we needed them. It didn’t do much good as response time was very slow or non existent .
Often when the police did come they literally told us ” if you don’t like it MOVE “.
There is much more from our projects days, that’s what we call them. And that was just a few years in the projects.
When my father got out of prison we moved to a place just as bad still in the neighborhood. It was pretty hard for a convict to get a job back then.
Believe it or not things got worse in certain ways. Police still didn’t help us and said the same things. The biggest I recall was the bombing of a house a few blocks away killing two police officers on a call of a WHITE woman being dragged into an abandoned house.
Back then there was a “hands off ” policies concerning blacks. My brothers got very good at fighting, so good that if they caught one of us alone they always asked ” your name Conrad?”. We got a reputation with our dogs that made them cross the street rather thanks walk by our house. We got so bold with our fighting that we called them racial slurs to their faces. Of course they were bold when they were in large crowds but get them one on one they ran.
xx
