Letter from Baltimore.
Dear Colin,
I live in Baltimore. Gangs of “youths”, usually 10-20 in number, ride to the white neighborhoods to target white people. These black children can be as young as 9 or 10.
Sometimes their parents accompany them and act as lookouts; while their children break into cars. Other times, they come to the neighborhood just to throw stones or spit on white people, especially elderly white women.
Another favorite activity is to sneak up behind white people and yell “Boo” into their ears as loud as they can. Also they enjoy stealing bike seats off of bicycles that are chained up by white people.
In some Baltimore neighborhoods it is advisable to leave one’s car unlocked and the windows rolled down because of the absolute certainty of a burglary occurring (rolling windows down prevents smashed glass).
A black business owner related a story to me about one of his employees stealing from a job site. The employee stated that this was not a problem because the victim of the theft was white; hence, there was nothing wrong with stealing from them.
While I was working at an upscale marina on the Baltimore harbor; I overheard a black yacht owner explaining to his son that they were going to “rise up” against their white oppressors.
I suppose the irony was lost on this gentleman. Here I was, a poor white dockhand; living paycheck to paycheck, and this black yacht owner still thinks he is oppressed.
