Letter from a Detroit teacher.

Hi Colin,

I graduated from Central Michigan University in 1968 with a B.S. in Biology (and strangely enough a minor in Political Science) and a Secondary Education Certificate for the state of Michigan.

Michigan was becoming to be a somewhat difficult place to get a teaching job but the Detroit Public School System had a rapid turnover and paid the highest salary so I applied and was assigned to Northern High School to teach biology.

It wasn’t long after I had started that I was returning to the school after lunch with one of the female English teachers. We were entering a side door when I happened to glance up and immediately pushed her to the side of the building as a ceramic commode had been launched from a second story lavatory window and exploded where we had been standing. The noise sounded like an atomic bomb going off and we were covered in debris. If I hadn’t glanced up one or both of us would have been killed. We were both white and I didn’t give it much thought at the time other than vandals. But it certainly sent a message.

Northern High at that time was the central focus of the Black Panthers. They routinely patrolled outside the school with German Shepards, the black berets and of course the mandatory sunglasses. They had loud speakers and routinely recruited kids in the school coming and going.

The school had a black Principal and Vice-Principal. At that time it was an unspoken fact that the school board wanted no disruptions and problems were quietly swept under the rug. We had several black radical teachers in the school and there was a group of “local” people (supposedly parents) who wanted to shut the school down.

Strangely enough, the kids in my classes weren’t the problem. A lot of poverty (I still recall a boy who was a straight A student and a pleasure in class. I said, “Bruce, you can take your coat off in class if you’re hot. He just said he’d keep it on. A girl came up after class and said Bruce didn’t have a shirt to wear. She said he didn’t have any parents and lived with family. I felt bad about asking him but I didn’t know.) Over all I liked the kids and they weren’t a problem. It was the outside agitators, the pimps getting into the building, drug deals, and fights.

The first football game I went to was an inner city night game. The Northern High band marched on the field – 15 strong playing as well as could be expected. A huge riot broke out during the game which was called. After that no more night games were allowed. The two teams would meet after school at a separate school with no spectators. Such was life.

The first basketball game I went to was in Northern’s small, cramped gymnasium. It was packed. The game was incredibly noisy as you can image when a kid stood and fired a handgun at the referee. The place became bedlam with kids trampling each other trying to get out. Such was life.

At Northern, fire alarms were a natural occurrence. There was never just one. One day we had seven. Each time the alarm was pulled, the fireman showed up and so did the Detroit Police Dept. They always sent a squad car over. So it was quite normal for the Black Panthers, the German Shepherds, the fireman, the police and hundreds of kids and faculty outside the building. Pretty much pandemonium.

The police always send the four biggest and baddest cops in the precinct. They had to. Send a small cop or a woman (weren’t many in those days) and they might not come back alive.

Then one day a group of militants entered the school after classes and took over the school office. They took the Principal, bound him and put a noose around his neck. They were going to hang him. The Vice-Principal was also taken hostage. I can’t imagine they actually intended to kill him but then you never know. They then cleared the building and chained the doors shut from the inside so no cops could get in. The usual “demands” were made and basically the school was shut down for three weeks while the school board bargained with the criminals. All teachers were sent to another site where we had to check in and sit there for weeks doing nothing while they tried to wrest control of the school back.

This would not be the first lock-out of my brief tenure but that story involves my teaching at Mackenzie High across the city in year two and three.

Have to go take care of my granddaughter. I live in a quiet town thank God.

More later including Black Biology and Black Math, more shootings, rapes, John Conyers, and wild times.

xx
