Letter from Asian woman on the subway.
Colin,
I am a current graduate student at the at a large urban university. My Asian spouse is a recent graduate also.
Late this afternoon during rush hour she was harassed on the subway between by a number of black youth. They surrounded her. One of them repeatedly asked to hug her. She repeatedly and politely declined. This youth forcefully grabbed her and pressed himself up against her. He proclaimed to the other youth surrounding her, “This is my wife”. She was terrified. She felt helpless. The group of offenders left the train. Before exiting, one of them pulled down his pants exposing his genitals.
Unfortunately, as I type this email, my spouse has changed her mind and decided she does not want me to send this email. The initial plan was to give you enough information about the time/train/etc,. that you may be able to access the CCTV footage of the event.
Unfortunately, she fears being labeled a racist if she speaks out against what happened to her. She believes that black people always get away with “this stuff”. “The media support black people.” “If I say something they will say I am the racist.” “They will say things like, well, she was asking for it and she probably enjoyed it.” “I don’t want people to say that kind of stuff about me.” “Never go against black people, you will be labeled a racist. Especially if you are applying for jobs. That kind of stigma being attached to your name closes so many doors.” “I don’t want to be around uncivilized people anymore.”
“Why do their parents allow them to behave this way?”
Her train of thought continues, but it’s pretty clear I am not going to be able to convince her to allow me to give more specifics. Even though we wish to remain anonymous, I am still going to send this email to you as another example of the many people out here that really appreciate the videos you create and are thankful for the work you are doing.
