Letter from the U.S. Navy
Hello Colin, I ask that I remain anonymous. My experiences with Blacks in the US Navy.
Not too much problems in Basic training. Nor in A-School, other than them being rude. Having a Black Third Class Petty Officers on a power trip or revenge mode towards Junior White Sailors (E3 and below). The real problems began when I got out to the Fleet in San Diego. The Senior Enlisted Black petty officers were too professional for all the B.S. It was the E4 and below that were actually violent. I mainly hung out with White and Hispanic Sailors. The ship I was on was going to be decommissioned, so I was transferred before the decommissioning.
The new ship I was on, there was a group of Black sailors in the supply berthing. One Black guy, a cook, a Mess Specialist Third Class that was incredibly muscular, and had a very bad attitude towards Whites and anyone he perceived as weak or gay. I was attacked by him twice, once in the P-way, he grabbed me by my collar/neck and threw me up against the bulkhead, telling me he was going to beat me up for talking trash about him, which I wasn’t, It was over an off-handed comment to someone else, not even a complaint, to the chain of command about him blasting music out of the galley, he was told I made the complaint, someone else asked him to turn the music down, nothing else.
Second time, it was a “payday” Friday at about 6pm, I was not on duty, the berthing was empty, I was in the lounge watching TV. Sailors on duty were either on watch or in their work spaces. This Black Mess Specialist walks in, I immediately get up to leave, He again grabs me by my collar/neck slams me down on the couch, then telling me “If this was anywhere else, you’d be s*cking my d*ck”. He held me down for a few seconds, then I got up and left. He did that to a few other junior White Sailors. No one filed complaints. I didn’t file a complaint because I did not believe it would go anywhere.
When I eventually got to Shore Duty, I avoided Blacks. Blacks on shore duty. Again, there were many professional Black sailors, but of the trouble makers, It was always E4 and below. I later worked as a Legal Clerk, while Whites, Hispanics, Blacks and one Asian all got in trouble for the usual violations; Underage drinking, Unauthorized Absences, a few DUIs, a few drug cases (Marijuana or Cocaine). Blacks committed more serious crime. Crimes I would briefly read about, those cases got forwarded to Article 32 hearings (similar to Grand Jury hearings). Those were always Sexual assault or very serious assaults & battery charges.
Eventually I made my way back to Sea Duty. I decided I was going to avoid Blacks as much as possible, but still had to work with them, while they were not violent, they were absolutely the most incredibly rude and most blunt people I have ever dealt with. I make a mistake, say or do something dumb, tell a dumb joke and they are within earshot, I would hear it all “Dumb *ss White boy idiot” “You be stupid White boy, I swear”. Eventually I learned the hard way, not to talk when they were in the area. I had a Black Supervisor and an Black Chief, the supervisor and Chief weren’t bad at all, they were both professional and fair.
I left the Navy after a number of years, I learned my lesson the hard way, I don’t want my kids getting this kind of crash course in race relations.
