Letter from North Carolina.
Dear Colin,
Here is a side I’am sure you were never told.
As everyone is aware of the whole civil rights movement of the 60’s and how changes were made to integrate schools, it’s always the black perspective that is heard, well,, let me give you what it was like from the white perspective of a 10 year old child (ME) being bussed into a black neighborhood to attend school.
As the buses rolled in with all the white kids they were met with blacks throwing bricks , sticks, rocks, and whatever else they could get their hands on, even to the point that adult blacks were coming on campus and attacking the white kids. We literally would have to run as we exited the bus to the front door of the school for safety, and normally the Black Principal would be gazing out the locked doors watching the attacks.
I got my ass beat every day,, for being white in a black neighborhood where we were forced to attend 5th grade (West Street School, New Bern, North Carolina) At the end of the school day,, I knew what was in store ,, another dash thru the killing fields and trying to dodge another beating,, that’s what we looked forward to the entire day.
We were equally met with black teachers that treated us with hate and injustice of punishment,, like we were paying for the sins of the whole white race. I remember my homeroom teacher was my last class of the day,, this man actually had the back section of the class roped off into a boxing ring, he would select a white kid and a black kid and give them boxing gloves and put them in the ring to see who was the superior race.
Folks,, I kid you not,, these are actual events, but because we were white, the stories are never told,, we would be racists. I have horrible memories of these events,, and this is just the top of the iceberg of things that we had to endure.
White teachers were assaulted by the neighborhood population, one in particular had a brick thrown thru her windshield as she was leaving the school which hit her in the face and permanently disfigured her appearance. When I see what is going on in cities like Baltimore, it brings back those days of horror,, but as an adult,, it’s not fear anymore, it’s rage and hatred against these people. No, they will not have any compassion from me,, they deserve the outcome. But i will say this,, let them keep pushing,, and one day it will backfire and the very ones that have dealt with their sense of entitlement will snap,, and lets see how that ends up.
At that time all 5th graders were assigned to go to West Street School, it was formally the all black grade school and therefore it was located right in the middle of the black section of town, I remember to this day the harrow the first day as the bus pulled up with us on it, all the black people around the bus calling us (white crackers) we did’t want to leave the safety of the bus but we were forced off into the crowd and started running for the school house door that was locked.
The sidewalk was lined with back people and black kids who called us names and pushed us down on the ground and slapped and kicked us. The principal watched thru the locked doors as if he was totally entertained. I remember being pushed so hard that i landed on my knees and could not stand up due to the pain,, and they mocked me and called me a (cry baby CRACKER) it was horrible,, these experiences have lived a long time with me and I never forgot how violent these people are and their quest to inflict pain on anyone,, almost animalistic.
