Sure Jusse Smollett did something wrong. Well, maybe he did. Either way, we need some mercy and kindness and compassion now. And what about the racism that forced him into that criminal behavior?
That is what we are hearing now on National Media. And still they talk about the real problem is white racism and White Violence. And still they don’t give examples other than it is subconscious.
We don’t play that game.

Letter from the Road
Hi Colin,
I’ve been travelling a lot lately and I recently met two people I want to tell you about.
I met a 3rd grade teacher in the suburbs of St. Louis. She said her district is bussing a few black kids into the ‘burbs. She has 2 black students that are constantly fighting the white kids over trivial matters- “I was using that pencil!” BAM. “You stepped on my sneaker!” BAM.
I asked her why kids this young are so violent. She assumed they came from a violent place where it’s ok to beat up someone that defies you or “disses,” you. Even if they accidentally step on your shoe. She said the violence is constant and always starts with these two kids. There was no violence before they showed up.
Last week I met an NYC retired police Capt. in AZ. He told me the black on Asian crime in NYC accounts for a large majority of NYC’s hate crimes. More than any other hate crimes. He said the fellas see Asians as;
1) gold diggas owning stores that are created to rob poor black folks, and
2) easy targets. An elderly Asian woman won’t fight for her purse. A young Asian man on a date doesn’t want his ass kicked in front of his girl so he surrenders his wallet.
The fellas have learned that Asians don’t want to fight. They hate them and prey on them. Asians have learned not to make the black kids angry.
I thank you for your courage and your research, Colin. I don’t want to give you get a big head but you’re a hero to me and my homies.

Letter from a White Survivor
Dear Colin,
My direct ancestor was one of two men who lead a group of English settlers from Massachusetts to Long Island, N.Y. in 1643. His son was the first white child born on Long Island. That child’s name was Caleb. So to say my roots in this country run deep is to put it mildly.
My family as I am told was abolitionist from day one. Aided slaves escaping north from southern chains. My great-great-great grandfather John was in Sherman’s army and it’s march through the south during the civil war. My family never owned slaves, were against slavery and fought for the freedom of blacks enslaved here.
Whatever colonial honor that my family had was gone by the time I was born in 1973. My father was a one of 7 children and was an Army engineer during Viet Nam. Mom was of Swedish/Italian heritage. Both parents were messed up in their own way. Neither ever loved one another and both had addictions. Dad drank himself stupid daily and Mom was a pill popper and a pathological shopper. They were married and divorced twice by the time I was 6 years old.
My first experience with racism was when I was just about 7 years old. I moved with my Mother to the north side of town. The mostly black side of town. But at that age I didn’t have a clue about race or racial issues. I was a kid. I used to go to a supermarket across the street from my building because they had animals like goats and cows you could feed and pet. I became fast friends with a group of black kids who lived in the next building over. We hung out all summer. We used to watch kung fu theatre on Sunday afternoons. You know, those old Shaw Bros. kung fu movies. We used to pretend we were those guys and pretend to kung fu each other. We were great friends.
So one day we were in the parking lot between their building and the market. An older black guy came walking up. He was the older brother or the uncle of one of the boys. He saw us playing and called the group over. When I came walking over he told me sharply to stay where I was. I don’t know what he said to them but the next thing that happened was my group of friends walked over to me and proceeded to beat the living hell out of me. Sticks, nunchucks, fists, feet, etc. They guy was laughing and yelling for them to hit me harder. I saw two Hispanic women walking through the parking lot. I begged them to help me. They just looked for a moment and kept walking. I finally fought my way free and got home. Never to spend time with those boys again. I was beaten bloody. Scratched all over my face, black eye, fat lip, cut lip, sore ribs and twisted ankle. I learned that day I was white and they were black.
Several years later I was sent to a school upstate in Hawthorne, N.Y. for kids with behavior issues. We lived in these building/houses they called cottages. This was in 1984. Almost from minute one I found myself having to fight. There were a large number of black kids, medium number of Hispanic kids and a small number of white kids. I was always being called a cracker, a honky, white piece of shit, etc. I was robbed of everything I owned at least 10 times in the first few months. Then one night it got really bad. As we left the mess hall a guy at the door handed out snickers bars. One each. As I walked I suddenly found myself alone. Next thing I know I’m jumped on by 5 or 6 kids from my cottage. They got the snickers bar. Well I was mad so I yelled out “f*****g n*****s”.
I didn’t know the full meaning of what I said. I just knew enough to know it was to them what honky was to me. When I got back to the cottage it was chaos. They had told the head man what I said. He was Jamaican and mean as hell. I only did what I did out of anger and only did to them what they did to me every day. But that didn’t matter. From that day on I had to fight. To school, from school. To chow, from chow. All the time. It took a year, a full year for me to finally fight off enough guys to be able to be left in relative peace. But I was always reminded from time to time that I was an evil racist who hates blacks.
During my second and last year there I was targeted by an older black boy named Troy. He used to beat me up when I first got there. So one night I wake up to feel my genitals being jiggled. I look down and it’s Troy. He had a razor to the base of my penis. He said “Get your lil white d**k hard or I’m gonna cut it off”. Then he proceeded to suck. When he realized I wasn’t getting hard he flipped me over onto my stomach and proceeded to lick my butt. All the while calling me the most foul white names. I really thought he was gonna kill me or at least cut me really bad. When he left I must have showered for an hour straight. He smoked cigarettes and I couldn’t get that smell off of me no matter how hard I scrubbed.
I managed after that to block my window so he couldn’t get in. I heard him try many times. Two times during the day when weekend staff was there he snuck in and used to threaten me into watching him jerk himself off. He used to say while he was doing it that he loved getting off by raping white boys. I knew it was only gonna be a matter of time before he tried doing the worst case scenario but luckily I went home before that happened.
In the summer of 1986 I moved back to my old town with my dad. He was drunk all the time and I was left on my own mostly. The town was starting to really get bad. I lived in a poor white area but still had to go to school with a lot of black kids. I probably fought every day for the last year of junior high and the first two years of high school. And it was always the same situation. A group of black kids thinking either “I” was the one who hated them, or that I was weak and couldn’t defend myself or that they simply wanted what I had. They always jumped you. They never fought one on one. By my senior year 3/4 of the kids in town were afraid of me because I had become so used to fighting 3-4 guys at once and winning. I didn’t see it as winning. I saw it as surviving.
All through my childhood I had to listen to blacks talk bad about whites, say they hated whites, or what they were gonna do to whites. I never in all my years ran into a white person say the same about blacks. All the racism I experienced or witnessed was black on white. For a long time, I had serious issues with being white. I hated my ancestry. Hated myself. I used to troll the internet when I got my first pc to find anything to make me proud or at least comfortable with who and what I am. Even white power sites. Which I will say are outright jokes. I’ve always been a history buff and some of the stuff on the white power sites is outright bullshit. I just couldn’t buy into their ideology. But as I got a little older I found myself becoming more and more proud of who and what I am. It took a long time and a lot of therapy for me to get there. I have PTSD and anxiety due to black racism and violence.
I’ll end with a story. So last night I had to go to a pizza party for the kid of my girlfriend’s co-worker. It was at sky zone. She asked me to bring my daughter and nephew. 3/4 of the place was black. I won’t lie, my antennas were up because of that fact alone. Within the first 5 mins a black kid larger than my nephew was on the dodgeball court. My nephew tagged him with the ball so he was out. Before he left the court he took a ball from another kid and threw it so hard at my nephew it took him off his feet. You could hear the hit over the music which was very loud. Knocked my 12 year old nephew out cold. Right in front of me a group of black kids around 10 were laughing and high-fiving over it. They loved it. I almost lost it. When the kid who hit my nephew saw me coming he took off running and the black kids stopped laughing.
That was one of about 15 incidents that happened that night regarding either my nephew or my 9 year old daughter. I’m a pretty big guy. I’m 6’1″ 275 lbs. covered in tattoos and I carry myself as a man who has no problem fighting, especially violent blacks. To me, most ignorant blacks who act that way are bullies. Nothing more. Every time I came walking up they got out of my way immediately. Every time i made eye contact they looked away first. I refuse to be bullied by blacks. They made my life hell and scarred me forever. And when I see all the anti-white hate out there or all the talk of giving more to blacks I get enraged. I feel like we owe them nothing and it’s they who owe us. We gave them a freedom we didn’t have to and they thanked us by acting like animals.

Letter from a White Boy in Black School in Lauderhill, Florida
Hello Colin,
I’ll happily share my experiences with you.
First, I’m now in my early 40s, and went to an all black middle school in South Florida, in the city of Lauderhill.
The conditions were simply horrendous. And what I’m about to say happened every day the entire year I attended this school. Every day.
Even before getting to school, the bus ride, to and from was a nightmare. The kids run wild, scream, cuss, fight, throw things and steal, all while on the bus. The bus driver, who was also black, did not care, no matter how many times myself and others went to her about getting punched or bullied.
For white, and Asian (what few there were) students, in a black school, our scariest time is when we are not in class. This is before school begins, between classes, during lunch, during recess or PE and after school ends. This is because while in class, even if and when we are harassed, there’s a high chance (not a definite one) that the teacher will stop the student. But even when the teacher intervenes, it can usually makes things worse because now that black kid is mad at the white kid, because he got in trouble for picking on the white kid. Even then, the teacher, knowing full well that the black kid(s) will have to be told at least five times to stop before they are finally removed from the class to go to the principal.
Every classroom was overwhelmingly overcrowded. 35 students minimum, and that was when students did not show up. And for every class, there would be no more than two white students ever. As much as most of the teachers actually try to teach, the majority or the kids would not listen, disrupt the class, fight, throw pens, pencils, or even books, towards the teacher. And when they would not harass the teacher for doing their job, they’d turn their attention to those who were actually trying to learn. So many times I’d have my paper I was writing on yanked away and crumbled up or my book taken and thrown at me, or I’d be hit with it in the head. The teacher would give that student a warning. A simple, calm warning after the black kid would throw a heavy school book at my head, leaving a bruise and a bump.
When they are finally told to leave, the most common response was, “I ain’t gotta do sh*t,” or, “Man, f*ck this class.”. And when they do leave, they hardly ever go to the office. Instead they will find a group of other black kids that have also been told to leave the class, and they all will leave the school campus to the local mini mart.
When class is over, most white students would hurry to the next class to avoid getting jumped by other black students. And by jumped, I mean black kids would run up to white kids, grab their shoulders and jump, forcing you to the ground. Then they would punch and kick you and your stuff while others would watch. All while laughing about it. If you were to ever dare and stand up for yourself and fight back, several other black kids would join in. Especially if you were winning.
After my second day at this school, I was jumped by two black kids and I immediately started throwing punches, connecting with one, knocking him to the ground. I figured if they saw that I would stand up for myself that I would get their respect. Or at least, a little. Absolutely not.
Black kids do not understand respect, nor honor. After I hit the first kid to defend myself, at least twelve more joined in, boys and girls, screaming at me, calling me a cracker and yelling, “Who the f*ck you think you is, white boy?” Or, “You think you tough, m***f*cker?” All while I was cradling my head. All I saw were feet kicking at me. That beating never seemed to end, as they continued to kick, cuss at me and spit on me. I was literally saved by the bell as they scattered to get to class.
I was jumped at least two dozen more times at that school.
I have gone to the guidance counselors, the assistant principal and the principal, sometimes in tears about what had happened and what was happening. Each time they’d ask me questions or say comments such as, “Well did you do or say anything to make them mad at you? Are you sure? Well, maybe you did, and you didn’t realize it.” Looking back, they actually tried to screw with my head and have me believing that it was my fault. They would never ever ask who it was or what they did. They’d only advise me to, “Not hang out with kids who will be mean to you…” Which is obviously ridiculous because its like telling a deer not to hang out with humans who may shot at you.
The only thing worse than being denied any help from the principal, was seeing a group of the worst kids in school, whom by the way, were all in their late teens(again, middle school) in the principal’s office, and he was happier to see them than he was me. I’m serious when I say, his demeanor was much more friendly and down to earth with the thugs running his school than their victims.
I had to beg my mom to get me out of that school. She finally did when I started skipping school just to avoid going. No student should ever have to be subjected to that.
During my last week there my science teacher approached me and said he was sorry to see, “a real student”, go.
The teachers are suffering almost, if not just as much, as students who are tormented at these kinds of schools. When I had to hide from groups of black kids everyday to avoid getting beat up, I started showing signs of depression. I wasn’t sleeping, lost appetite for days at a time and lost interest in anything else. I finally got transferred out after the year ended.
What scares me now is that these schools are only getting worse, and there are more and more schools like this across the country every year.
You and I both know the school board denies it, and worse, the media lies about it. Because if they told the truth then the school board would have to do something.
This is why I brought up the Post and Courier news paper here in Charleston, South Carolina. Not only do they deny there’s a black problem with schools and crime, but they focus more on praising black people whenever possible, and calling out black oppression every chance they get.
Please look in to how bad things are here. Its only gonna get worse. Yes Dylan Roof did his horrendous mass shooting, and Michael Slager shot that the black man too, but that does not balance the keel in any way.
I apologize for this being so long, but please keep doing what you’re doing. People need to know the truth.

Letter from Central Florida
Hi Colin,
I was high school class of 04 in central FL, so it’s been a while, but I remember many things distinctly.
My first hour there freshman year, a black kid got in the face of my homeroom teacher over something he said, and threw a punch that nearly connected (teacher was young and fast).
I remember thinking wow he’s going to be expelled. He got one day of in school suspension, less than a slap on the wrist.
Later that same day during PE I’m walking through the locker room and see this jacked kid (turned out to be our football teams fullback) choking out some poor geeky white kid while the gym teacher looked on doing nothing, and other kids laughed and screamed incoherent encouragement.
One shouted “Das a strong ass n*gga rite there!” as the kid passed out. I looked over again and the teacher had simply walked away. That’s when I knew I had entered into something entirely different.
The majority of the faculty were scared of the students, and let the kids run the show. There were students getting handjobs / flashing guns / dealing weed in class while teachers pretended not to notice.
Certain bathrooms were no go zones for white kids unless you were ready for a war and wanted to chance getting jumped and left on the floor unconscious and covered in urine.
It was a f*ck*ng zoo crossed with a prison, more than it was a school.

Dear Colin Flaherty,
I was watching your video, “Black People Attacking Handicapped, Disabled, Sick & Blind Victims (Colin Flaherty Compilation #9)”, when I heard you mention that you are working on a new book and want to hear people’s stories. I have a few experiences I can relate; they are not headline news but do provide some insight to black mob violence.
In 1974 I was one of the first students to be bussed in an effort to integrate public schools in Memphis, Tennessee. I was in the eighth grade, we were twenty white kids, and about 800 blacks. I walked down the hall to class one day surrounded by blacks and one of them tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and it was complete stranger. He hit me in the nose, then I wrestled him to the ground and kept him there until a teacher arrived. We went to the principal’s office over it. Another time, black female students surrounded me and stole my Mu Alpha Theta fund raising candy. I had to come up with $20 out of my own money – not easy on an allowance of 45 cents per week. Both of these incidences have something in common: I am surrounded by blacks and there are no other whites.
When I was in the Navy, I was cleaning up the black section of our crew’s compartment. It was 9:00 pm, lights out, and I got ready to leave. Suddenly something slammed into the side of my head. I was dazed and stumbled for a half a minute. When I came to, I found a shoe brush on the floor that someone had used to hit me. One of my friends in the adjacent compartment said it was so loud, he thought a locker had fallen. The blow had been hard enough to make my ear bleed. It was just a few drops of blood, and the hospital corpsman could not even put a band aid on it because of the ear’s curvature. I asked him if I had a concussion and he shook his head, “No, you don’t have a concussion.” An investigation was made, but there was not enough evidence to prosecute anyone. Again, I’m surrounded by blacks, no whites, and someone takes a swing at me.
Just to be clear, this happened around 1985 when the Military was fully integrated. The compartment was all black because of their own preference. After this incident, the division officer imposed a sleeping chart so that the distribution of sailors had to be more diverse.
Around 2009 I was working on a Bachelor’s of Arts in German. At one point I worked two part-time jobs, one in the morning, one at night, and went to class in between. It’s past 10:00 pm at night and I’m finally catching the bus from downtown St. Paul to go home. Everyone on the bus is black, except me. You guessed it – a black teenager comes up to me and tells me to move over so he can sit next to me. I tell him to sit somewhere else, I’ve been working all day; I’m tired; there are plenty of other seats. He replies, “Let me sit next to you or I’ll hit you.” I defiantly tell him to go ahead and stare him in the eye. When the vehicle approaches to the next bus, I see his muscles tense up. The bus driver called the police and they took the videotape of the incident from the bus. ( In retrospect, I should have put my hands in front of my face to protect myself. I was lucky I didn’t lose a tooth.)
These four experiences all have one thing in common. A white person is surrounded by blacks and one of them takes a swing at him. If a person like me can see a pattern of black mob violence in his individual life, then surely cops, sociologists, newspaper reporters and elected officials can see it with even more certainty. But if one searches the internet to find data or academic research on it, there is nothing there.
You showed in one of your videos where a white male is assaulted by two black men, but there were seven blacks present at the scene. The news reporter stated that it was an assault by only two people, but you argued that if there were seven people there then seven people were involved. I’ll back you 100% on that. The behavior of a large group of blacks is much more dangerous than a mixed racial group or an individual. There ought to be a bumper sticker that says, “See black mob violence.”
In the newspapers and on TV news, the problem with black violence is ignored or artfully covered up. Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown appear to be isolated events, and political groups may claim that the police or even the victim are at fault. These political groups ignore the fact that there is another 99% of the problem below the radar; it does not show up on the nightly news but it is just as significant. For every headline news item, such as Alex Wroblewski, the bartender who was killed, there are a thousand smaller crimes like assault, theft, robbery, and vandalism.
For every one of these crimes, there are another thousand even smaller hostile events: profanity in public places, trespassing at Starbucks, talking too loud at the library, leaving the trash on busses. A thousand times a thousand is one million, so there are one million hostile acts for every headline news item. For every Alex Wroblewski, there are another one million blacks involved hostile acts against whites. I call this the iceberg principle, because just like an iceberg is mostly below the water, 99.9999% of the racial conflict does not make the news. This is why so many people do not believe there is a problem with black violence or that it’s an unimportant statistic.
Where do these one million hostile acts come from? There is a society that creates them and your videos document that society perfectly. “Beautiful day in the neighborhood at Subway,” is one of my favorites. It ought to be given to college students as an assignment, “Compare and contrast the 1960’s lifestyle of Mr. Rogers with the high tech, high efficiency life we see in the Subway. Which situation seems more civilized and why?” Videos like this depict the culture that creates black criminality and your interviews explain the hows and whys of it.
Lastly, here is an e-mail I recently sent to the MetroTransit Police in St. Paul. More than anything it shows the types of ordinary conflicts faced by thousands of people thousands of times each day.
The library I describe is across the parking lot from the Sunray Transit Station.

This incident occurred at the Sunray Library at about 4:50 pm, Sunday, Aug 20, 2017, just a block away from the Sunray Transit Station.
To begin, I saw the recent attack on the bus driver on route 70. I think it was Friday, Aug 18, or maybe Aug 11. A black, male teenager threw a chicken nugget at him and then shoved a shopping cart at him. The driver shoved the cart back. Another driver called the police. My route home was delayed a half hour, because the Transit Supervisor decided we needed a new bus driver.
Ever since then, I can’t go through Sunray without seeing police cars. It has become much safer there. I remember a month or so ago, two black teenagers were pretend fighting and came within a half inch of hitting me in the face. Ever since then, if they are pretend fighting, I wait for my bus on the opposite side of the street from the main stop.
I hope the police can address this problem of pretend fighting, or mock melees, that are so popular with this ethnic group. Certainly, the teenagers don’t engage in this behavior when the cops are around, but at the neighboring library they become somewhat of a nuisance.
Only two days after black teenagers picked a fight with the bus driver, there was more misbehavior at the library.
A group of black teenagers were giving their female librarians a hard time. When, I first arrived about 4:35 pm, the young, white librarian approached the teenagers to say, “I already told you once . . . ” She approached them a short time later to repeat the same routine again. Finally, on or about 4:50 pm , Sunday, Aug 20, 2017, one of the black teen females yelled out a sentence containing five or six vulgar words. It was extremely obscene and extremely loud. It could be heard from one end of the building to the other. That was really an incident for the police to deal with. As it was, the administrators did not react, and the building closed at 5:00 pm.
I have to wonder if some of the recent anti-social behavior at the bus stop has transferred to library. However, even before recent events at the bus stop, disruptive black teenagers were giving the Sunray librarians a difficult time.
I’m sorry I’m late turning this in. I just started a new job on a night shift with a long commute. Most days, I don’t even have time to turn on my computer.
The workers at Sunray are wonderful people (mostly). They are usually hospitable, professional, and friendly to all their patrons. They may decide that the facility performs well enough, and they don’t need police assistance. On the other hand, they might appreciate it if you dropped by and told them you are in the neighborhood.
The library does a lot of favors for black people. They provide services for immigrants, Muslims, African Americans, etc.. But, when you do a favor for anyone they just keep expecting more out of you. Some of these patrons may be taking too much advantage of the Sunray’s hospitality.
The police might want to check in on the Library sometime, just to make sure no one is shouting obscenities across the building. You might remind the staff that a police car is often less than a block away, just in case they need assistance.

The videos at public institutions here are usually erased after about three weeks. I sent the e-mail a month after the incident to protect the librarian involved. I didn’t want her to get in trouble for not following rules.
Ever since I sent that e-mail the library has become, well, more like a library. Adults are not practicing their Somalian speaking skills, their children are not running around, it no longer resembles a day care center. The librarian that was originally part of the incident even seemed to gain some status.
As you say in your recent video “Chicago: Three dead white dudes must have made the fellas really mad”, the official statistics say crime is down, but the violence and brutality are worse than ever. The Hillary Clintons of this world may think black on white violence is just so many numbahs, but the librarians at Sunray, myself, and countless others know that the problem runs deeper.

Letter from a soon to be former teacher.
Colin,
I am a teacher who has had it I am done!
Allow me to explain: I am a teacher and have only taught in Title I schools (low income, high need…”urban” schools) for the past 7 years. My student-teaching experience was the only exception, and wouldn’t you know it, it was the best teaching experience I’ve ever had.
I am a black teacher and know that I have specifically been hired at my current school because the demographics have changed dramatically and they don’t know how to deal with these kids (more on this irony later on in this letter). The school is 80% black and 15% Latino. It’s a suburban school, but because they want to give all kids “a chance,” they are letting in kids that should actually be attending Chicago Public Schools and/or surrounding low-income areas. Forget about the tax-payers. Forget about the kids who actually live in the district. Just let all of these kids in and let them drain resources. Let them pack classrooms to capacity and wreak havoc on the school. These students and parents are not part of the community. They have no respect for rules, the law, or civility. The result? What was once a very nice school is now a disaster. A war zone. A ghetto mess.
The test scores have gone to hell, the behavior is atrocious, and the GPAs are some of the lowest the school has ever seen. I have students who cannot read or write. Last year, we gave diplomas to students who failed numerous classes (teachers were forced to pass them). Many of those students could not read or write if their life depended on it. But we have to keep those graduation rates high. We have to keep the suspension rates low. We can’t have too many Fs. We have to keep up the facade that everything is ok. But it’s not ok. You can’t put a bandaid over a bullet hole.
Rather than the school board and administrators identifying the problems and taking the correct action, their white guilt is causing them to turn a blind eye and make excuses. They blame it all on systemic racism and say the cards are stacked against these kids because America and Trump are racist. They don’t hold them accountable for their behavior or life choices. The parents know it. The kids know it. So what do they do? The parents and kids act like damn animals. Literally. Kids run, scream, cuss, and spit in the hallways. They are totally empowered. They have no respect for property, authority, and do not care about academics. The parents are never concerned about grades unless it means their kid is ineligible for football or basketball (the two most popular career choices). When that happens, they’ll happily yell and cuss at the teacher–claiming that they are not helping their kid. They’ll come up to the school and act a fool in the front office–making demands. They never confront their kid about slacking off in school. Oh no. The world is against their kid. They are never at fault.
Of course, all of the white teachers and administrators don’t get it because of their white privilege. In fact, they’re constantly apologizing for their privilege. Privilege, privilege, privilege. The reason black boys have the most suspensions in our school is because they are being targeted because of unconscious racial bias. It has nothing to do with the fact that they sell drugs in the hallways or engage in gang activity. It has nothing to do with the fact that they cuss out teachers and threaten Dean’s Office staff. It has nothing to do with the fact that many have no father at home, and therefore, have not had a man show them how to behave. Nope. Better blame systemic racism and unconscious bias.
Did I mention that I’m black? Yes, I have to mention this again. Because if a white person said all of this–if they said the truth–they’d be labeled as a white supremacist. If I say it, I’m a coon or [insert other racial epithet that blacks give other blacks that speak the truth are not down with the cause]. I’m sorry, but I was raised by two parents who never taught me that I was a victim. In fact, the most racism I’ve ever experienced has come from other black people. They called me names in school because I was articulate. They teased me because I was in advanced classes. They accused me of acting white and a lot of other ridiculous things. Even as a young teenager, this didn’t hurt my feelings. It just made me shake my head and feel sad for them. It also made me angry at my community. We look at other black people who excel, speak well, and move beyond the norms as “selling out.” This thought process is so toxic it makes me sick.
My parents did not allow me to make excuses for failure. I was taught to have manners and couth. I was taught to speak well and take education seriously. I have two degrees and will begin my Ph.D program in two years. My parents did not have much, but they wanted their daughters to have better. They didn’t teach us that the white man was out to get us. They did not hold us down–they lifted us up. I completely get that not everyone has the pleasure of having such great parents, but you know what? We can’t control the cards we are dealt. But, we can control how we play the hand. Stop using life circumstances (that were out of your control) as a crutch and an excuse to be mediocre and a straight up menace to society.
This is what I, as a black educator, try to explain to my white administrators. You’re not helping these kids by coddling them, patronizing them, and making excuses for their bad behavior and low grades. You’re crippling them. You’re setting them up for failure. It’s that whole concept of the soft bigotry of low expectations. If these kids want to overcome adversity, then they need to learn how to cope. They need to be educated. They need to be held accountable. They need to know how the real world works.
I think about the scene from Remember the Titans with Coach Boone. When Coach Yoast was trying to comfort all of the black players because Boone was “too tough,” he made the point of saying he doesn’t do that with the white players (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk2DlQuog6E). Why on earth would you have a separate set of standards and expectations because of skin color? That is actually racist. This is what my white administrators do to black teachers who try and actually get our students to see things from this perspective. They think we are being unreasonable and have the nerve to try and school us about how black kids learn best. It’s beyond laughable at this point. It feels evil now.
Personal responsibility and parental accountability makes too much sense. It’s a lot easier to cry “racism.” So…I’m done. I’ve tried for 7 years. I really have. But I’m only one person. I can’t change the system. I can’t change the backwards thinking. I can’t change the fact that these public schools want us to teach victimology. If we are not extreme leftist social justice warriors, then we are racist. I cannot stand it. And I’m certainly not about to allow this stress to kill me.
Of course when I tell people this, they say, “But you can’t. These kids need someone like you. This is where you can make a difference.” My answer? I should not have to sacrifice my happiness for anyone or any system–especially when it’s obvious that there is no change in sight. We are doomed. It feels like our society is doomed. Public schools like this are garbage and I just pray for our future.

Letter from a teacher.
Colin,
I’ll edit this way down. The supply class was a handful, grade 11 English, Applied (General level, not university-bound), terrible regular teacher. Mainly white kids, a few black and Indian kids), it takes 10, maybe 15 minutes to get them settled down, books open, working in pairs (quietly) or in pairs (quietly).
A knock comes to the door, two black girls (remember, I’m editing this) first mistake I let them in, get them sitting working, second mistake I let them sit together. Few minutes more, two more black girls show up (repeat mistakes above). It starts, those two start whispering, talking, yanking garbage, the lowest of highschool gossip.
It was if an oxygen reducing gas was piped in, and I could see everything that a working classroom should be dissipating from the room. I have dozens of these stories, but I want to stress one main thing; in my 30 odd years, not once have I ever heard or seen a colleague treat a black student with nothing but professionalism, never once did I see a black kid ever receive anything less than any other student, never.
They may have lamented poor behavior and attitude because it was so overwhelmingly negative and destructive. Stealing pizza day money, deplorable behavior at basketball games (the schools had to stop fans from attending games). This behavior was not just highschool hijinx, this had an element of stupidity, wanton, vandalistic, pointless, disrespectful…no point in going on, everyone probably knows where this is going.
