Letter from a former grad student.
Colin,
I just recently learned that my family were victims of a horrific race-based crime spree that they had never admitted before and it broke my heart. When I have tried to talk about how learning about this crime made me feel, I have been ridiculed and called a racist and told I have “white privilege” and that black people “can’t be racist”.
I even had to drop out of graduate school because the professors like to pretend that white people constantly falsely accused black men of crime, and all discussion of black-on-white violence is considered racist dog whistling. No discussion of race-based violence toward whites is allowed – white people are expected to sit and nod quietly while stereotypes about us are hurled like insults and we are blamed for historic injustices committed by other people.
In academia, all violence by black males are one-off incidences and if you try to talk about patterns of violence they just squeal about structural and unconscious racism and bring up lynching to try to shut the conversation down. Funny how my family was attacked by black men so recently, but I’m supposed to shut up about that and instead be sympathetic to black men falsely accused by strangers in a time before I was born, purely because I’m white? F- that nonsense.
At any rate, thanks for talking about the prevalence of race-based black on white violence in a time when it is so politically polarized and for telling the stories of those impacted by black-on-white race based violence in your book. It is hard to deal with when all of society (academia, media etc.) wants to protect the criminals and tell victims whose skin tone doesn’t fit with the narrative to shut-up.
