Letter from a reader — and victim of black on white crime.
Mr. Flaherty,
I purchased and began reading your book, “White Girl Bleed A Lot” , some time ago. I put it down when I was about halfway through it and only recently picked it back up to finish it. To say the least, your work is shocking, enlightening and thought provoking.
I have been aware of black mob violence for some time having spent 4 days in late April, early May 1992 sitting sleepless on my front porch with a loaded 44 magnum, keeping roving bands of scum from burning down my house. Had I not had that 44 and been obviously willing to use it, the turnout of those 4 days would likely have been somewhat different. That was my first exposure and the seminal event that opened my eyes. When I saw the reviews of your work, I knew I had to read it.
I would like to say thank you for having the courage to accept the risk and say what needs to be said. Today, I purchased, ‘Don’t Make the Black Kids Angry’: The hoax of black victimization and those who enable it. I’ll be watching your career moving forward, to see what follows.
With my appreciation,
xxx
