NBC News and the Associated Press want you to know there is no such thing as black mob violence. Ditto the Washington Post and Philadelphia Inquirer.

Especially in the hundreds of cases of Knockout Game now receiving so much attention in local and national media across the country.

The rules of the Knockout Game are simple: Gather a group of black people. Find a white person. An Asian will do. Punch them in the face until they are knocked out. Or dead. Or your arms get tired.

If you relied on local and national news accounts, you would not know the violence has a racial component. But the videos solves that problem.

Many episodes of black mob violence and mayhem — including the Knockout Game — are recorded on video. Or posted on Facebook. Or even bragged about on Twitter.

Many are documented in White Girl Bleed a Lot: The Return of Racial Violence to America and How the Media Ignore it.

But that does not matter much to NBC and AP and the other media oulets. As part of the flurry of media coverage of the Knockout Game this week, the media outlets trotted out a psychologist who says ignore the video. Ignore the overwhelming evidence of black mob violence. There’s no pattern in the predators. Or in the white and Asian victims:

“It’s hard to excuse this behavior, there’s no purpose to this,” Jeffrey Butts, a psychologist specializing in juvenile delinquency, told the AP. “When someone runs into a store and demands money, you can sort of understand why they’re doing it, desperation, whatever. But just hitting someone for the sheer thrill of seeing if you can knock someone out is just childish.”

This model of denial of the racial component of black mob violence is popularized in dozens of seminars around the country every year at local and national chapters of the National Association of Professional Journalists.

Their advice for covering racial violence? Don’t.

It also echoes what Jesse Washington, AP’s race reporter, told your humble correspondent about racial violence after the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin. No such thing, quoth he. At least not black on white.

More and more national and local news outlets are picking up the beat: Despite the avalanche of news stories on the Knockout Game, most still ignore the central organizing feature of the violence: All the attackers are black. And most of the victims are not.

NBC affiliates around the country got into the act this week as well. After ignoring dozens of recent examples of black mob violence all over the Washington, D.C. Area in the last two years, NBC weighted in with yet another shrink:

People with Type T personalities, which characterizes risk-takers and thrill-seekers, are motivated to commit violent acts, like smacking strangers in public, according to Professor of Educational Pyschology Frank Farley.

“Many of the perpetrators may be these T types and one of their things is pushing the envelope,” Farley told NBC Philadelphia. “It’s risky to go up and slap someone in public.”

NBC and its witch doctor may be unclear about the level and intensity of racial violence in the nation’s Capitol. But the readers at the Washington are not. After a recent story about the Knockout Game in Washington, they unleashed a storm of critical fire at the paper for refusing to tell the truth about black mob violence.

Here’s just one of many comments:

“It is amazing how the Washington Post can report about this phenomenon without the issue of racial violence coming up one into the discussion. It is a shame that honesty took a back seat to what is really going on here.”

Philadelphia is center of denial as well as violence. The City of Brotherly Love has been the scene of more than 100 episodes of black mob violence over the last three years. Some resulting in permanent injury and death. Many on video. It got so bad that two years ago, Mayor Michael Nutter went to a black church to plead with black people to stop the black mob violence.

More recently, local media has reported more than five cases of the Knockout Game in Philly. Black mob violence is also such a regular event at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, that a school staffer recently appeared on the local CBS affiliate to plead with parents and police for help with the violence and anarchy that are an everyday part of life at this black high school:

“It’s mayhem. Students are in the halls, they’re smoking in the bathroom; cigarettes, marijuana,” said a worker at the school, who asked not to be identified. “We can’t contain them and it’s really hazardous for us working and these kids are not being educated at all.”

“It’s a zoo in here. Parents really need to come up here and see what’s going on in this school because it’s ridiculous,” said the worker.

The staffers remarks echo earlier comments from 2010, when a federal judge found that black students at South Philadelphia High School had assaulted and harassed Asian students daily — for years.

The principal said she did not call police because she did not want to “criminalize” the black students.

Even so, the Philadelphia Inquirer dutifully ignores the epidemic of black mob violence in schools, downtown and the gentrified South Philadelphia neighborhood.

“But it’s unclear if the trend even exists,” said the paper this week.

The Inquirer received a Pulitzer last year for its reporting on violence in Philadelphia schools. But if you want to learn anything from the series about racial violence, bring your magnifying glass to read about it — because most of the time the topic is discussed it is to minimize it. Or say how much better it is.

The upward trend of racial harmony was not unclear to Steve Huber earlier this year. When he wrote an article for Philadelphia Magazine called Being White in Philly. Huber talked about the unrelenting racial violence and the fear it creates among white people.

Mayor Nutter said the article was “disgusting” and called for an investigation by the City’s Human Rights Commission.

The Philadelphia Inquirer, again, took a back seat to racial crime and violence: The article was seen as “dwelling on negative experiences that whites had with blacks that often fit into racial stereotypes.”

Racial Journalism 101: Crime statistics are stereotypes. Leave them out and the story is “anecdotal.” Best not to do anything. Class dismissed.

Unless of course you are a family court judge named Wayne Bennett and your write one of the more popular black blogs in America. Bennett has racial violence thing figured out: White people deserve it.

Here is the deal, no matter how violent some young black punks act and wild out towards groups of white people–or a single white individual, it will never make up for all the violence that was practiced against people of color throughout this nation’s history. So spare me the isolated (and high profile) incidents of horror.

Bennett’s comments that black on white crime is not much to worry about echo the remarks of a community organizer who works for Temple University in the heart of the Philadelphia’s high crime area.

Temple hired Brandon Jones because he had “street cred.” The idea was that Brandon would keep it real with the people creating the violence and mayhem. Here’s how, says the University’s medical journal:

“Brandon Jones knows the streets of South Philadelphia, and he understands what his young clients are going through in their daily lives. He can relate.”

Ready for the money graph?

Jones says he understands the high energy level of youths and the need “to blow off some steam.”1

When Brandon is done with his community organizing gig at Temple, he will have no trouble finding work at a place sympathetic with that point of view: The Philadelphia Inquirer. The Washington Post. Or NBC News. Or AP.

I would agree with you when it comes to the mainstream media not reporting on this issue, but there is one guy who has been documenting this stuff for a couple of years and you can find more information about this topic on his website (www.whitegirlbleedalot.com) than anywhere else.

He wrote a book called White Girl Bleed A Lot (Thomas Sowell mentioned it in a recent story on this issue) and his name is Colin Flaherty.

He’s been trying to warn people about this, but nobody is listening.  Maybe you should talk to him.

Philadelphia reporters just can’t say it: The City of Brotherly Love is the site of frequent and intense black mob violence and black on white crime — including at least five recent examples of the Knockout Game.

From the suburbs to the subways, they play the game in Philly the way they do in Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Springfield, Missouri, Champaign, Illinois and dozens of other cities and college campuses around the country: Find a white person. An Asian will do. Hit them as hard as you can until your arms get tired or they get knocked out. Or die.

In a recent Philadelphia case, a 63-year old man was walking his dog when two people stopped and “punched him right in the mouth and knocked him to the ground,” said police spokesman to the CBS affiliate. “The only apparent motive in these attacks, as in all Knockout attacks, is to inflict injury on a random victim,” the station dutifully reports.

In another “random” case, women are attacked on the subway.

  None of the stories say the attackers are black. And the “random” victims are not. Not black. Not random. “The media will not say what many people in Philadelphia know: These attacks are examples of black mob violence and black on white crime that are  now accepted as a normal part of life in Philly,” said Taleeb Starkes, author of the Uncivil War. “Black leaders are now past denying it, and well into defending it. But always trying to shut down conversation about it.” Black mob violence in Philadelphia takes many forms. Some directed at whites. Some at Asians. Or Gays. Or old people. Or young people. In Overbrook High School earlier this month, hundreds of black people fought and destroyed property during a mid day riot. Nine students were arrested. Two were hospitalized. Along with one administrator who tried to stop the violence.

But the latest episode caused staff to issue a plea for understanding. And help. Said one staffer to the CBS affiliate after the recent riot, violence is an everyday thing at this school:

Examples abound:

Earlier this year in a Philadelphia suburb, nine black people stalked, taunted, beat, kicked, laughed at, spit at, and threw a local school girl into traffic — ultimately sending her to the hospital with a collapsed lung.

Over the last several years, downtown Philadelphia has been a national center of  black mob violence the local media likes to call flash mobs.

Without ever mentioning that everyone involved in the violence and property destruction is black, Philadelphia media have reported dozens of examples of large groups of black people rampaging through downtown and the gentrified South Philadelphia neighborhood: Stopping traffic. Pulling people out of cars. Invading restaurants. Stealing phones. Assaulting people. Temple University, located near the epicenter of much of this chaos, declared last year the violence was a public health problem. After lots of deliberation, they decided to hire three community activists from “the neighborhood.”

Imbued with “street cred,” they  go around and talk to the leaders of the violent flash mobs in Philadelphia and convince them to stop beating, looting, stealing, vandalizing and all that. They hired a 26-year old guy named Brandon Jones. Here’s why: “Brandon Jones knows the streets of South Philadelphia, and he understands what his young clients are going through in their daily lives. In 2010, a Department of Justice investigation found that officials at South Philadelphia High School had ignored daily examples of black mob violence directed at Asian students. The principal said she did not call the police because she did not want to “criminalize” the black students. And besides, she hinted to reporters, the Asians students were responsible for the violence because they antagonized the students at this 87 percent black school by not knowing enough about black culture.

She gave them a pamphlet instructing them how to behave around their black classmates so as not to encourage violence.

Some say the media does not cover the racial violence because it is too politically sensitive. Others say because it is so common.

Philadelphia Magazine tried earlier this year with a halting and apologetic story called Being White in Philly.

“Everyone might have a race story,” said Steve Huber of Philadelphia Magazine. “But few whites risk the third-rail danger of publicly speaking about race, given the long troubled history of race relations in this country, and even more so in this city.”

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said the article was “disgusting” and called for an investigation from the city’s Human Rights Commission. Local and national media chimed in, blistering the story, shaking their head in disbelief at those who noticed black mob violence.

Jamilah Lemieux of Ebony said he wanted to “slam my head” against the desk after reading Being White in Philly because Huber did not recognize that white racism is responsible black for violence.  And people like Huber are in a “panic” because their “deeply engrained notions of White Supremacy” give them unrealistic expectations of how safe they should be in their — and other — neighborhoods.

Black mob violence in Brooklyn — a personal story.

Hi Colin,
My name is Mila, I’m a 31 year old Russian immigrant, Registered Nurse in NYC and I reside in Brooklyn, NY nearby a beautiful Marine Park. (Except for the JHS at the corner of it…)

Me and my friend were violently attacked two months ago by 6 black teenage girls while a couple of their male friends were possibly video taping it (they were trying to hit us repeatedly with their first aiming specifically at the head). When the patrol officers arrived (some 22 minutes later) they were asking us repeatedly whether we really want to file a police report. When we did, they kept repeating that there was nothing personal about this attack and that it was completely random.

All of that seemed strange at a time until I started researching similar cases only to find out how wide spread it is…

The good part of the story is that despite the police officers not being encouraging in the least and their best suggestion being “Well, if you see them again call 911”, I did manage to take some pictures with my iPhone as they were merrily walking away, which later helped us get the youth officers from the local precinct go to the school and have the principal identify some of them  and get the detective assigned (prior to that, there was simply “no case”.

So far, two were arrested and identified, and the first one reported 2 others. There’s no word of the other 3. Next week me and my friend are meeting with a prosecutor on this case and I’m wondering what are the possible consequences are. The only facts we know are that they are juveniles (who just turned 16!…) and are known trouble makers…

Prior to this attack I had no idea such things are happening and now, two months later I’m reading the news and there are at least 3 more similar attacks. What are the consequences? What is it that we can do at this point? Is there anything we can ask the prosecutor for specifically? Where do we go after the case is closed to make the public aware? When I asked the detective he said oh that’s a very common thing and yet I’ve never heard of it while living in the US for over 10 years…

I found your knockout article to be ludicrous, flawed, and prejudiced in the racially-charged way it was written. Let me start by saying that I completely agree that the kids who did this are complete monsters, and should be charged and sentenced to the highest degree. They are disgusting.

However, I believe you are very incorrect when you say that these crimes are explicitly, racially-motivated; yet, I DO believe these victims were chosen on the basis of their skin. Please, hear me out.

Having worked with many inner-city, impoverished youth, I can tell you firsthand that most youth do not hold any general animosity towards white, or Asian, or any other youth outside of the Black ethnicity. Moreover, many are intimidated by them intellectually, because they know that inner-city schools are predominantly horrible, and they know the good schools are in the suburbs – and most of the students in those schools are white. Now, here is where race becomes a factor in these knockout games.

Many youth look at people’s strength and assault capacity as a function of what they learned from cartoons, stupid movies, etc. – if they’re eggheads, they’re weak. So, having been told they are dumber than whites, Asians, etc, by statistics, media, and even their teachers, they see these “smarter” groups as being physically weaker than them. Therefore, these “other” groups seem like easy targets to them, because they believe that although they are not smarter than these groups, because of that they are definitely stronger. Which is completely wrong.

I write this as a male, college senior who has already accepted an investment banking offer on Wall Street. I also write this as a black male who grew up in the suburbs but worked with inner-city youth in Flint, MI for 6 years. And in summary, I say this:

The young people who commit these “knockout” crimes are despicable. They are ignorant, without empathy, and should be institutionalized and undergo immense psychological therapy. However, they choose their victims in such a way not based on any hatred for any ethnical group, but rather because society has told them that they are stupid. Society has told them that they will not amount to anything. Society has brainwashed them into thinking that they are “dumb but strong” while other groups, specifically whites and Asians, are “smart but weak.” And we know that none of this is true.

But this leads these youth to anger and boredom, and those things lead to the “Knockout” game, where they prey on those they have been told are weaker than them. So the real crux of the problem here is NOT a general black hatred for whites and Asians, but rather the anger / confusion / aimlessness that comes from the lack of real options provided by an inner-city education and a complete lack of self-worth and confidence. Until these key issues are addressed, these mindless events will continue to happen.

I hope you will read this and come to realize that these events are not acts caused by a hatred of whites, but rather an extremely deep, pervading ignorance that is a result of poor education and negative self-esteem. I also hope that, in the future, you will not jump to the racism conclusion and set people of different skin colors against one another even more than is already occurring today. Thanks for reading.

I did this because I felt your logic was flawed, and that by using my own experiences and empathy I could give you a more credible explanation.

If you still disagree then fine, I failed in my goal. I don’t mind my view being shared, but I would rather you not reveal any of my private information in a public space, as my letter was to you alone. I asked; I did not beg. If you intend to share my private information against my own wishes simply because I gave you criticism and offered you a perspective that you didn’t like, then so be it. However, as you are a journalist, I would be surprised you’d stoop to something so petty simply because you cannot take a sound critique.
