Letter from a frustrated black teacher.
Dear Colin,
I’m writing to give you a bit of insight into the life of a black teacher who does not subscribe to the victim mentality that is rampant within the black community. My life as a black teacher in black schools is hell. I suppose that since I believe in personal responsibility and accountability, I’m not a “sista.” Oh yes, according to other black people, I’m a coon, sellout, Uncle Tom, etc. I no longer give a crap. Facts don’t care about feelings.
A bit of my background: While I wasn’t an on the extreme end of the spectrum, I suppose you could’ve labeled me as a liberal SJW during my undergraduate years. I believed all of the hype—that blacks were still helpless victims of systematic racism, that modern feminism was a noble cause, and that Obama would bring hope and change. I voted for him enthusiastically in 2008. By the time 2012 came along and I had finished student teaching, I started to have my doubts.
By then, I’d seen some ridiculous nonsense on my liberal arts campus and became weary of certain reports in the mainstream media. This led me to start doing my own research. I started listening to Larry Elder, Thomas Sowell, Ben Shapiro, etc. I started reading more independent news websites. These outlets were the “red pills” that I happily took in large doses. However, reading is one thing; experiencing is another. I credit my complete awakening from all the bullshit on one thing—becoming a teacher in Title I schools.
At my first school, the kids were completely out of control. They’d curse at teachers, fight every day in the hallways, and would never do their work. I’d try to call home, but there’d be no response. Or, in some cases, the parent would be defensive and uncooperative.
When I’d give homework, maybe one or two students per class would actually have it done. When the zeros went into my gradebook, the assistant principal came to my classroom. She asked me about the number of failures in my class. I told her, “The students won’t do their work. I give them class time and even offer to stay after school for extra help. I’ve also offered extensions. They don’t do anything.” She then replied, “I understand you’re struggling as a new teacher. You haven’t realized yet that these students come from difficult homes. You can’t expect them to do homework. In fact, when I was a teacher, I never gave homework. We did everything in class. You have to meet our babies (EDIT: um…teenagers) where they are.”
My response: “I get that their lives might be difficult, but why are we allowing them to use this as a crutch? Won’t this continue the cycle? Aren’t we crippling them by coddling them? Shouldn’t we prepare them correctly so they can get OUT of their current situations? How are we getting them “college and career ready” if we tell them they don’t have to do homework, or any work for that matter, because they’ve had a hard life?” She did not appreciate this 21-year-old novice teacher challenging her theory and asking relevant questions. She then said curtly, “I suggest you find a way to make sure these grades get better by the end of the semester” and then stormed out.
That day, I had an epiphany of sorts: HOW IS THIS THE WHITE MAN’S FAULT? You are literally telling me to teach my students to underachieve. You are asking me to give them something for doing nothing. How is this going to help them in the real world? They’re going to be stupid, entitled victims…but will no doubt blame the white man and systemic racism for their failures in life.
They are not born victims; the black community is producing victims–and white liberals are perpetuating this. My eyes were opened. I realized there was nothing I could do to change things within this district (they needed to keep their Title I money, so teachers had to fudge grades and suppress discipline reports). I was sick of the verbal abuse from students, intimidation by administration, and feeling miserable at work.
I was done. I resigned at the end of the school year. I went to another predominantly black school district, rinse, repeat. Same crap. I resigned and took the job at my current school district. It was the only job I could find. It’s extremely difficult to get into the better school districts. There are more white students at my current school, and having more diversity in my classes has been somewhat of a saving grace for me.
However, white flight is in its final stages. My school will probably be all black in the next 4 years. Not only are academics an issue, but the discipline policies are a mess.
Enter Senate Bill 100, which mandates schools to get rid of zero-tolerance and to implement multiple tiers of restorative justice before giving consequences. This an effort to reduce the school-to-prison pipeline. Sounds great, right? Even though, I think it should be home-to-prison pipeline. Apparently, it’s the schools’ fault if your kids become thugs and commit crimes.
Anyway, here’s a recent incident at my school. A student brings a knife to school. He initiates a verbal altercation with two students in the cafeteria and then pulls out a knife. Chaos ensues. The student is restrained and then taken to the Deans Office and the parent is called. Crazy mama comes to the school and begins to yell at the principal and deans. Why? Well according to her, because they were in the cafeteria, no one could prove that he brought the knife to school as a weapon.
For all they knew, he could’ve brought it to cut his food. Therefore, her little angel should not face any consequences and the administration is racist for treating him like a criminal. Now with SB 100, there’s no zero tolerance for bringing knives—especially if you can’t prove intent. So, the kid only got a couple of days of in school suspension.
A few other incidents:
o A dean’s assistant was knocked unconscious by a student
o A student pushed two teachers into lockers and shoved a cop while yelling, “I’m gonna kill ya’ll.” He was not expelled. He was moved to our new “in-district alternative program.”
o A student told me “F*ck you, b*tch” and caused a major disruption to my class for about 5 minutes. I had her removed from class and then wrote her up. I then received an email from the assistant principal saying that they cannot give her a consequence until I offer a restorative intervention with student.
The kids aren’t completely stupid. They can figure out that there are no consequences for negative behaviors.
I’ve finally had enough. I’m in a system that is not willing to change or face reality. Public Education is promoting liberal propaganda and falsehoods. They are validating victimhood and fostering learned helplessness. Standards are going away in favor of feelings. If I was a parent, I would NOT send my kids to public schools.
When I told a few trusted colleagues that I am planning to resign and leave Education altogether, they responded by exclaiming, “Oh no! You can’t! These are the kids that need you.”
You know what? I’m so sick of this guilt trip and the idea that black students only need black teachers. My current school only wants black teachers so they can avoid the accusations of racism (because it’s a majority black school with mostly white teachers and administrators).
Most of these Title I schools don’t support no-nonsense black teachers who promote accountability in their classrooms. They don’t support black teachers who refuse to perpetuate the MYTH of black victimization in a “systemically racist” society. They don’t support black teachers who encourage black students to stop with the slave mentality. And because my values and beliefs are considered to be conservative or “right leaning,” I actually had a white administrator tell me that I don’t know the struggles of the black community.
I’M NOT KIDDING! The audacity of her comment sent me into a rage.
The White guilt and SJW mentality is real.
I did not grow up rich. I had two loving parents, a mother and a father, who worked hard and instilled values in their two children. They always told us that they wanted us to be better than them—to make the most of our lives and to fulfill our dreams. Education was important and I earned straight As with the support and guidance of my parents.
They did not let me play down my intelligence when I was teased by (you guessed it) other black kids in my school. Instead, they told me to hold my head high when I entered my honors and AP classes. I knew that the only way I could attend college and grad school would be through scholarships and grants. So, I was a focused student with goals and the drive to succeed.
My race was not a hindrance. My family never told me that the white man is holding me back. I am actual proof that it’s all a myth (I’m black, I’m a woman, I’m well-traveled, I’ve earned two degrees, I’m financially independent, etc). Yet, these black groups still claim that I am down-trodden because of my race and gender. They can’t seem to understand the correlation between intact families/moral values/high expectations/lack of victim mentality with success.
I’m done. The kids that need me are the ones that want to learn—NOT these thugs and “dindus” that act like feral animals because…you know… #blacklivesmatter. I’m over it. You can’t help people that don’t want to be helped.

Of course, this boy dindu nuffin. Not true. The 3 kids mentioned in the video were involved in a bad group fight mere minutes before this video was recorded. They cut through & hid in this officer’s yard, then proceeded to sit on his porch. They also threw a bb gun in his bushes. When he came out to see what was going on, they became defensive. He identified himself as a cop and had his wife call 911 for backup. They tried to flee. He caught and detained the one on the ground. The other got away, which is why you hear him say,
“Tell your friend to get back here.” The other decided to record instead of running. The boy that was detained was non-compliant.
The boy’s aunt, who posted the video, does not make any mention of what her nephew was doing, or how he got into this situation. No accountability. Let’s just blame all police officers for the bad behavior of black boys.
