Racism:
The systematic subordination of members of targeted racial groups who have relatively little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power (Whites). The subordination is supported by the actions of individuals, cultural norms and values, and the institutional structures and practices of society.

Individual Racism:
The beliefs, attitudes, and actions of individuals that support or perpetuate racism. Individual racism can occur at both an unconscious and conscious level, and can be both active and passive. Examples include telling a racist joke, using a racial epithet, or believing in the inherent superiority of whites.

Active Racism:
Actions which have as their stated or explicit goal the maintenance of the system of racism and the oppression of those in the targeted racial groups. People who participate in active racism advocate the continued subjugation of members of the targeted groups and protection of “the rights” of members of the agent group. These goals are often supported by a belief in the inferiority of people of color and the superiority of white people, culture, and values.

Passive Racism:
Beliefs, attitudes, and actions that contribute to the maintenance of racism, without openly advocating violence or oppression. The conscious or unconscious maintenance of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that support the system of racism, racial prejudice and racial dominance.

Cultural Racism:
Those aspects of society that overtly and covertly attribute value and normality to white people and Whiteness, and devalue, stereotype, and label people of color as “other”, different, less than, or render them invisible. Examples of these norms include defining white skin tones as nude or flesh colored, having a future time orientation, emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology, defining one form of English as standard, and identifying only Whites as great writers or composers.

Institutional Racism:
The network of institutional structures, policies, and practices that create advantages and benefits for Whites, and discrimination, oppression, and disadvantages for people from targeted racial groups. The advantages created for Whites are often invisible to them, or are considered “rights” available to everyone as opposed to “privileges” awarded to only some individuals and groups.

Race
A pseudobiological category that distinguishes people based on physical characteristics (e.g., skin color, body shape/size, facial features, hair texture). People of one race can vary in terms of ethnicity and culture.

Ethnicity
A group whose members share a common history and origin, as well as commonalities in terms of factors such as nationality, religion, and cultural activities.

Culture
The way of life of a group of people including the shared values, beliefs, behaviors, family roles, social relationships, verbal and nonverbal communication styles, orientation to authority, as well as preferences and expressions (art, music, food). “What everybody knows that everybody else knows.”

Acculturation
A dynamic process that occurs when members of one culture (culture of origin) come into contact with another culture (host/dominant culture) over a long period of time. The process involves exposure to, reaction to, and possible adoptions of aspects of the other groups culture. Adapting to the characteristics of the larger or dominant culture, while retaining some of one’s unique cultural traits.

Assimilation
The process of giving up connections to and aspects of one’s culture of origin and blending in with the host/dominant culture. Also, the wholesale adoption of the dominant culture at the expense of the original culture.

Prejudice
An attitude or opinion that is held in the absence of (or despite) full information. Typically it is negative in nature and based on faulty, distorted or unsubstantiated information that is over generalized and relatively in-flexible. Prejudices can be conscious or relatively unconscious.

Oppression
Treatment of a group of people within a society that results in the systematic denial of equal access to civil rights, freedoms, and power within that society. It involves a devaluing and non-acceptance of the target group and can be manifested economically, politically, socially, and/or psychologically. Individuals, through their values and behavior, can collude with a system of oppression which contributes to its maintenance in a society.

Equality
“In any given circumstances, people who are the same in those respects relevant to how they are treated in those circumstances should receive the same treatment” (p. 45). Equality defined in this way, looks at the individual and the circumstances surrounding him or her. It does not focus on group differences based on categories such as race, sex, social class, and ethnicity. This view is one of assimilation because it assumes that individuals, once socialized into society, have the right “to do anything they want, to choose their own lives and not be hampered by traditional expectations and stereotypes” (Young, 1990, p. 157).

Equity
“…. deals with difference and takes into consideration the fact that this society has many groups in it who have not always been given equal treatment and/or have not had a level field on which to play. These groups have been frequently made to feel inferior to those in the mainstream and some have been oppressed. To achieve equity, according to Young (1990), “Social policy should sometimes accord special treatment to groups” (p. 158). Thus, the concept of equity provides a case for unequal treatment for those who have been disadvantaged over time. It can provide compensatory kinds of treatment, offering it in the form of special programs and benefits for those who have been discriminated against and are in need of opportunity.”

Equitable Access
Equitable access provides groups of people access to resources, services and programs that would not otherwise be available to them due to disadvantages created over time resulting from many factors including marginalization, racism, discrimination, and oppression. In essence, equitable access attempts to create a level playing field between the have and have nots.

Equity and Equality Definitions came from Krause, J. K, Traini, D. J., & Mickey, B. H. (2001). Equality versus equity. In J. P. Shapiro & J. A. Stefkovick (Eds), Ethical leadership and decision making in education (76-90). Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum.

Letter from a lawyer.

April 12, 2015 — 1 Comment

BlackKidsAngry_Cover_2400x2400Colin,

I have been an attorney for 38 years – lots of experience.  My experience with cops is pretty bad.  I don’t like them and I NEVER trust them.

My first client they beat up for the hell of it – they got pissed at him and let him have it. Since he rammed one of their cars with his they had a right to be pissed.  But, the anger they manifested was not what I expected out of cops. There was NO excuse for it.

I saw this today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KIKUEjn3Z0.

Very frustrating.

On the other hand I totally agree with you about the cause and level of black violence in America.  Blacks hate whites.  I have represented many people of color and 99% they have been very troublesome clients.

They don’t haven’t anyone at home except enablers.

One story you might like:  Years ago a  friend of mine was in prison and he told me that his prisoner friend (a black man) had an 18 year old son that had just gotten arrested for breaking and entering with a deadly weapon and asked if I would help him out for free. I represented the kid and got it reduced to a misdemeanor with 90 days in the county jail. It was a really good deal the kid got all pissed at me because he wanted to get off the charge (of course).

I had a long talk with him – talked to him like I was his uncle or father.  I told him you need to do something with your life. He said “What? I’m a high school drop out, my dad’s in prison, ya da ya da.”

I ask him would he like to be a welder, he said sure. I said “this is what you do, go down to the welding school on Washington Street and tell them you would like to  attend welding school. He said I don’t have money for that. I said “I Know, ask them if they will help get you a grant or something to pay your tuition and other costs for attending. They will do it, I said.

He went to jail, did his time and I didn’t hear anything from or about him for 10 to 12 years.  Then, one day, the receptionist buzzed me and said there was the big black guy that didn’t have an appointment but would like to talk to me for a few minutes, if I would take the time. He says he knows you.

Intrigued, I ask her to bring him back to my office.  This big black guy comes in and introduces himself. I didn’t recognize him. He said “you don’t remember me, do you?” No, should I . He said he was that kid and he wanted to come by and thank me  for what I said to him.  He said he thought about what I said the whole time he was in jail. When he got out he went down to the welding school and applied.  When they asked about the tuition he asked for their help. They got him a grant. He graduated, got a union welding job, was now a shift supervisor, was married with three kids.

To say I was shocked, happy and every other gratifying feeling you can imagine does even come close to describing how I felt.

The Bible says “Save all you can”.

Colin,

I have many incidents involving blacks while going to school with them.

There was too many to count, i’ll just tell you the more memorable ones that happen to me or the ones i witness firsthand.

I grew up in a black majority in the city of oakland california. This was in edna brewer middle school.

Boy did i felt unsafe going there. The first day of transiting from elementary to middle school was shocking because seeing the behavior displayed by the black youth was like being put into a cage with wild apes.

On the very week going there I remember one of my fellow student who went to elementary with me was beaten severely and went to the hospital. He transfer out of there as did many others.

He apparently was more quick temper than i was because you see the black kids thought it was okay to form into a line with other black students and go around at lunch time smacking the back of the heads of other student.

Which did happen to me more than once but they also did it to my peer which they beaten him up for bravely but foolishly standing up to them. Okay on the spanish class! our regular spanish teacher was absent and we had a substitute teacher. Now this substitute didn’t gave a damn about teaching anything, (not like the class paid any attention to her lessons anyway) she was just there to collect a paycheck.

Now there was this black kid I used to go elementary with, he and I didn’t get along because I was the few back in elementary who stood up to his bullying.

So anyway he had made new friends! oh he would get his friends to surround me… hitting/smacking me in the face, taking my backpack and rummaging through it.

The biggest one there must have been their leader or something because he was the one who pretty much decided if this group with going to jump me or not. he basically just robbed me of my lunch money every day.

Which I eventually just skipped that class everyday. I had to hide in the bathroom staffs in the hallway corners and avoid the security guards, because I always would get threaten and made to do or say humiliating things to avoid a group beating.

I am ashamed to say I coward down to them and avoided it. Now after begging my parents to change school but only to tell me to shut up, stop complaining and man up.

I started carrying a folding knife to school. I made a promise to myself to never use this in anger or in a fair fight. Oh did that knife save my ass so many times.

I was walking home from school and suddenly a group of 12-15 black got out of their bus and walked towards me. surrounding me completely. I knew it was going to be bad so i walk right into the middle of the road and pulled out my knife.

In the most threatening matter a 14 year old kid can be. I snarl out,

“I’m going to kill a few of you before i go down!” Which i saw none of the blacks were brave enough initiative the first assault.

This went on for a few minutes which felt like hours. My hands were shaking my feet was numb. Eventually the block in the road got the attention of the police.

Once those kids saw the police they scatter into different direction. The police drove me home that day.

I took a different route home from that day forward. Away from the main street. I saw many stuff too. The disrespect and harassment to their teachers. The way the black guys would harass the pretty girls. There was too many to count.

I want to forget it.

Letter from a reader — and victim of black on white crime.

Mr. Flaherty,

I purchased and began reading your book, “White Girl Bleed A Lot” , some time ago.  I put it down when I was about halfway through it and only recently picked it back up to finish it.  To say the least, your work is shocking, enlightening and thought provoking.

I have been aware of black mob violence for some time having spent 4 days in late April, early May 1992 sitting sleepless on my front porch with a loaded 44 magnum, keeping roving bands of scum from burning down my house.  Had I not had that 44 and been obviously willing to use it, the turnout of those 4 days would likely have been somewhat different.  That was my first exposure and the seminal event that opened my eyes.  When I saw the reviews of your work, I knew I had to read it.

I would like to say thank you for having the courage to accept the risk and say what needs to be said.  Today, I purchased, ‘Don’t Make the Black Kids Angry’: The hoax of black victimization and those who enable it.  I’ll be watching your career moving forward, to see what follows.

With my appreciation,

The real story coming out of South Carolina is not that a white cop killed a black man by shooting him in the back.

The big story from pundits and professors told in hundreds of headlines across the country is that black people are relentless victims of relentless white racism. All the time. Everywhere. And that explains everything.

And the shooting in South Carolina is just the latest example.

But as the caravans of activists and anarchists make their way to North Charleston, black mob violence and black on white crime and black attacks on cops proceeded apace around the rest of the country. Still wildly out of proportion. Still ignored.

” you’re just doing this ’cause I’m black” –

An old girlfriend of mine worked in a 7/11 conv store, she took her job very seriously especially ID Card check for tobacco and booze.

She had almost no problem out of anyone over this except black people, not just whites but ALL other non-black patrones in the store.

2 different times she told me about how a large black man came in to buy his 40 of beer when she ID him he said he didn’t have it with him so she said no beer, He cleared the whole counter off into the floor, register, lotto machine and all then walked out the door daring anyone to stop him.

the next time a young black girl came in wanting to buy some philly blunts or small cigars, again no ID, the girl threatened to kill my girl friend after screaming ” your only IDing me ’cause I’m Black”.

My girlfriend quit her job the next day.
