Letter from a school bus.
Colin,
In “73” I was monkey elbowed by a black student older than me on the school bus because “I was in his seat” and I didn’t back down, I did not defend myself, it was an unwritten rule not to fight, and my dad used a belt like a tool.
I cried, and the bus driver, a black female called me to the front to “punch” him… I may have been a “wuss” but I was no idiot, so I didn’t. I didn’t tell my parents or school.
In 7th grade a black female teacher paddled me the day after a cassette recorder was broken at our groups table, I wasn’t there the day before. Either time I did not report it, cry out the black people did it, or even racism, they were just another day in “this thing we call life”.
We were a family of six, not poor, but not “well off”. We were not raised yes sir and no sir, but we “respected” that belt and our parents… and adults. So I simply say teach them to defend themselves, and if it develops into aggressors in numbers, defend yourself… by any means necessary, whatever it takes!
