Letter from Titusville.
Colin,
I lived in a relatively mid sized town called Titusville in FL. right across the river from the Kennedy Space Center.
Since it was the early 80’s this little boom town was still largely segregated with the black neighborhood in the center of town. The black neighborhood was not what one would consider a ghetto. There were only one or two really questionable apartment complexes which were known to be the hub of drugs in the area. Overall the area was a little run down and I don’t think there was a whole lot of overt crime like there is now. All white people knew to pretty much stay out of that area. If you went through the area in a car you would get a black male come up to your window at a stop sign and ask if you wanted drugs. If not they would usually tell you that they didn’t want white people in their neighborhood. Actually, happened to my dad once or twice while taking a shortcut through the neighborhood.
Before, I started riding the bus when my family first moved to FL from Boyertown, PA. Me and my older sister would walk to school through this neighborhood. We would get threats from some black kids walking to school as well as some adults. I was lucky enough to make friends with a couple of black boys that would could walk to school with us so we would not get bothered in that neighborhood. I still remember their names. They were Joe Cador and Tyrone Joe. They were good guys and saved my sister and I a lot of grief.
Now that you have some background I’ll get to the main subject.
In the mornings the bus would swing through the black neighborhood first and all the black kids would sit in the back of the bus. I would assume that was by choice considering. Anyway, after the black kids were picked up the white kids were picked up and we sat in the front of the bus. Usually what happened was that the white kids that sat in the seats right in front of the black kids would get the side of there heads slap or the back of there heads “flicked”. Now that I think about it age wasn’t really a deciding factor. It was just whatever white kid that was unlucky enough to get the seats. Most of the time it was usually the older black kids in 5th or 6th grade that would harass the white kids sitting in front of them. When someone would “tattle” to the bus driver she would usually threaten the black kids with an office referral if they did it again and that was the end of it for a while. Everything would be quiet for the rest of the week. Come Monday or Tuesday the cycle would start all over again. I honestly don’t remember anyone getting an office referral for doing this.
Well that’s as far as I remember.
