Letter from a public high school teacher.
For almost ten years I was a public high school math teacher in Southern California.
I am almost your same age (July 5, 1955) .
The last time I taught was 2006-07 school year at Firebaugh High School in Lynwood. There was an incident in my class that was maybe 30% black and 70% Hispanic. Not one white kid in the school.
There was this one black freshman that was always giving me problems. I really tried everything with him. Then one day, one of the other teachers came in to do a presentation in my room for about 20 minutes. The teacher herself was black. I sat back and watched to see if this kid would act up and how she would handle it. Sure enough right on cue he started disrupting the class.
She stopped and walked right up to his desk and looked him in the eye and said, “You shut your black face or I’ll slap you into next week”.
I didn’t realize it right then, but that incident was a turning point for me.
I couldn’t teach these type of kids and these were the only job offers coming my and they were few and far between at that.
I had two BAs an MA and a clear credential with 10 years invested and never got tenure anywhere and for the most part got stuck with the lowest unmotivated students.
The movie “Stand and Deliver” did an unintentional disservice to a lot of teachers. I wasn’t a miracle worker, just a math teacher.
2007 was the last year I taught anybody anything. I could go on for hours all the horror stories of teaching, but this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
You might want to google my old principal at Firebaugh, just for kicks. Might make an interesting youtube video.
