Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson decried street violence Thursday in the wake of a downtown dustup over the weekend that led to widespread media coverage.

Local detectives, meanwhile, are still looking for some of the participants in the Saturday night fray on River Street in which two Forsyth County men were injured.

“Violence has no place on the streets of Savannah,” reads the statement Jackson presented during Thursday’s City Council meeting.

“The altercation that took place on River Street this weekend is absolutely unacceptable,” she said. “As a community, we must come together and condemn those who would use hateful words in response to minor slights or resort to physical confrontations to settle disputes.

“We’ve all heard multiple versions of events of Saturday. We’ve all been inundated by rumors. But let me be clear: The court of public opinion is not where justice is found.

“Our police force has an active and aggressive investigation into this matter. We call upon our citizens to work with police to find all of the participants in the incident on Saturday and to share any information they may have that could assist in the investigation.

“Rather than getting swept up in the rumor mill of misinformation, we must focus on discovering the truth of what took place so that those guilty of criminal activity can be found and held responsible, to the full extent of the law, for their behavior.”

Videos detectives are reviewing show two groups of people — each including children — walking on River Street.

When one group encountered eight members of the Forsyth County family standing on the sidewalk about 9:45 p.m., one man avoided contact by walking onto River Street while a man and woman worked their way through the family, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.

Just after that man walked through the cluster of family members, he was confronted by one or two men in the family, and a verbal altercation ensued, Miller said.

The man who had walked around the family pulled the other man away and they left. But one of the men in the Atlanta-area family continued to talk to him as he was led away, Miller said. At that point, he broke free of his friend and ran back into the crowd where a fight ensued, with members of both groups trying to break it up.

The video shows a woman with the second group trying to separate the parties and pulling a female family member away by her hair, Miller said.

Police were on scene within 10 minutes of the first call, but the second group had left by then, Miller said.

Videos indicated members of both groups were carrying beverages, and officers on scene reported a heavy odor of alcohol, Miller said.

Detectives are asking members of the second group, which appeared to be a family with children and an older couple, to come forward and provide their version of the altercation.

One male was wearing a yellow shirt, the other a red shirt and later took it off and was wearing a white tank top. A younger female was wearing a white skirt or shorts and a beige or yellow top. The elder male was wearing all white and a white hat.

They — or anyone else with information about the fracas — are asked to contact Downtown Precinct detectives via the police department’s non-emergency number at 912-651-6500.
