Letter from a volunteer.

Colin,

First post here. I feel violated and I want to know if anyone has had a similar experience.

I just finished a shift of volunteering at a local clinic and was waiting for the bus. When it arrived 10 minutes later I was relieved to see it….only to be bombarded with groups of children and an over all crowded bus. I never get off work around 3, so I was not used to dealing with kids on the bus.

Over the course of a few stops I find myself in the back of the bus standing in between a group of 8th grade boys (Tshirt had a K-8 on it and they couldn’t have been younger). They are loud, rude and rambunctious so when a seat opens up in front of them I go for it just so I am not in the crossfire.

This is when it happens. My braided hair is yanked with the force. My head hits the rail and I am fuming. I turn around and tell the boy directly behind me “What did you just do? Why would you do that? I am an adult, you are a child. Do not ever touch me again.” He stares straight ahead the whole time, ignoring me speaking.

I turn around and all of his friends and him proceed to call me a bitch, to mock every word I said, to threaten to beat me up, to even steal my things. Everyone who saw this entire situation said nothing.

When we are getting off the bus, one of the kids shoves me. This is where I lost it. I exited the bus, called my father and called transit police. I filed a police report and they said if they could find the kids that they will be banned from public transportation.

All I wanted to do was hit this kid and his friends. These kids managed to make me cry. These kids are future predators. How on earth are people raising kids like this? I am from a small southern town and moved to a big city, is this what I should just expect with city life?

xx
