Letter from the US Navy.
I remember in the early 70’s when I was in the navy, we were the first group to go to race relations classes.
I had just graduated from a chocolate high school and was robbed and beaten by black’s on a regular basis. It was horrible.
The class was led by one white and two blacks. They stood up in the front of the class and just ripped whites. They complained that blacks in the navy used to have all the crappy jobs. Okay, they don’t now. However they continued trashing the whites in the class.
We went into groups and had to talk about how we were supposed feel. When the main group re-gathered each one of us had to get up and say how we felt. I noticed in the group of about 100 sailors that there were about 15 from the Philippines.
When it got to me I said
I grew up in a minority neighborhood as my family was poor. Since I never caused any of these problems I feel no guilt.
They attacked me verbally. I turned to the group of Filipinos and said… You people do all these crappy jobs the black’s used to do… why aren’t you being represented by these people? In a flash they went ballistic and started yelling at the people on stage… why aren’t we being represented? We are doing the crappy jobs.
After about one minute when it calmed down the people on stage yelled at me… kicked me out of the week long class… called me a racist… and wrote me up with an article 15. I laughed all the way back to my ship. The article 15 was later dropped.
Just one of the many minority stories I lived through.
