Letter from St. Louis

Dear Mr. Flaherty:

It’s after 10pm central time and as I type this I am watching the St. Louis CBS affiliate…. so far

An elderly white woman in her 80s was attacked in the Delmar Loop by a black man Angelo Scott.  He has been apprehended.  His beating of the old white woman has left her with a concussion and other injuries.

Officers have been hurt on Ivory Avenue… details are still coming in.

A permanent plaque memorial that depicts Michael Brown wearing a graduation outfit is going up in Ferguson.   The memorial leaves out how he assaults elderly slightly built Asian men and lifts said little Asian man up off the ground by the terrified man’s throat.

More coming in… and the news has only been on for about 15 minutes.  I will send you links when they are put up after this live broadcast ends.

FYI black on _______ (fill in the blank with white, Asian, Latino, immigrant, Bosnian, gay, college student, lesbian, disabled, elderly, bi-racial, artsy types, etcetera) in the Delmar Loop, Central West End and in downtown areas of St. Louis is out of control.

Sometimes Mr. Flaherty it feels as if St. Louis has entered armageddon (and I’m not religious).   It feels as if you are not black you are a target in a war zone.

PS I am not white either- and I don’t understand why white folks are being demonized as they are.  I’m not white and I am also gay and disabled.   When I go out I am not afraid of whites.  If I am going to be harassed or given shit being “out and about”… whether people are targeting me because of me not being white or being gay or being disabled (or because of all of these…) it is usually blacks doing this.

PS Part II  I try to tell everybody about your books and website and Facebook and twitter and all that.

xx
