Letter from a school.

Hi Colin, I came to find your website because I had shared my school experience in the early 70’s on another blog post and on a Facebook post and was ripped to shreds, which is so very painful.  So here is my story:

I went to Jr. High school in Lansing Michigan in the early 1970’s when bussing had just started.

There had never been any problems in my neighborhood/elementary school that was mostly white with a few minorities; we all got along fine.  But when the black students came to my middle school, they often would come to school carrying bats and chains and golf clubs to start riots. When I would see them as a group of about 20 walking towards me in the hall, I was terrified.

My brother and his friend had to jump out the window once to escape the riots and get home where it was safe. When my white friends and I would walk down the hall, the black girls, who didn’t even know us, would walk behind us and punch us hard in the back over and over again.

We never said anything; we were too afraid. The teachers seemed to either be afraid or indifferent to do anything about it. There was a black girl who threatened to beat me up everyday if I didn’t give her my lunch money. She eventually stole my purse, was caught, and was expelled.

I honestly never saw whites abusing blacks, but saw the black students often bullying and harassing the whites. This has been so painful to not be able to share my story without being attacked (by whites!) and feel silenced. The first relief I felt was to find your books and read in the comment sections that I was not the only one this happened to. We too, were taught that the 60’s and 70’s were only about white on black violence.

I am truly hoping that you’ll write a book on what white school children went through at the time of bussing in the 60’s/70’s and get our story out there.  I hope my particular experience is helpful.

xx
