Letter from a Mom.

Colin,

Setting the stage: I came from an upper middle class white family, private school, cheerleader, honor roll. I was a very independent, trend setter. In the 80’s I decided to marry a black man (I’m not bleach blond or fat, you know the stereotype of the time), I’m about a 7, 9 if I try 😊.

He was/is actually a decent guy, but the whitest black guy I ever met at the time and I had always dated white guys. He listened to rock, went to keggers, wore Levis and I really didn’t see color, I didn’t do it for a ‘reason’. My parents of course were pissed, but got over it and my family was pretty welcoming after they got used to it. His family did not. All of his 8 brothers married white girls and his 5 sisters and parents were very vocal about calling us “white b*tches- that seems to be their favorite thing to call us.

We had a daughter and they were decent to her, but I would have to hear their BS when she wasn’t around, I endured the visits for her sake.

Honestly the only negative comments were from black women, we had a LOT of them in my efforts to let my daughter know her culture (the good side). HA! I know of exactly 3x I heard a white man make a comment about WHY I was with a black guy (you know, the stereo-type). We divorced 8 years later. I married a white man, no not because of the racism experience.

My daughter (who is 30 now), was educated in private schools except this one time she begged to go to a public school. She thought black people were ‘cool’ she was 12 and the school was about 50% black, 50% other. She has always been very good at academics, popular and athletic (graduated ODU with a Masters in Comp Sci and minored in Biology). The black girls HATED her, not standard girl jealousy-vicious, loud, physical. She had friends of all kinds, they called her “white B*tch”, everyday relentless harassment over her hair, her skin, etc.and her MOM. Finally I went to the school, all black faculty. I protested the fairness after they told me that it’s not racist for blacks to act racist, so they would not intervene at all. That was the extent of public school. She graduated from a 98% white (American) boarding school abroad and never had an issue.

Her step-father adopted her by the way (his name has privileges, but she still maintained a relationship with her father and his family). My husband AND his family welcomed her with open arms, even his black sheep ‘Confederate Flag loving, gator wrestling, big tires, gun toting brother, taught her how to shoot straight and go muddin’ lol so much for stereotypes.

I can tell you about the time her and one black girl didn’t get along and the girl was beating her up, the mother called her a racist, never mind that all the other girls she was playing with were black. The ‘mother’ than got HER mother who called me every white pejorative she knew and had the pack of kids that had gathered throw rock at us.

This was not our neighborhood, we were visiting, but one other time as it was getting dusk, this white family, mom, dad and twin 10 yo boys, had their household loaded in a UHAUL and were leaving fast, they yelled at me to LEAVE and all of the sudden a SWARM of black 8-12 yos were throwing rocks at them, the last one hit the bumper- it looked like locust. The girl who my daughter had befriended parents were a nice family (white) and had had their condo for a few years but were letting it foreclose because the neighborhood had went Sec 8 and they weren’t safe! This was Arlington, VA 1993. I remember reading the newspaper and the girl whose mom called my daughter a racist had been shot in the face by one of her tom cat admirer- the boys would hang out on the lawn after dark for this 12 yo like she was in heat.

The time her step-father her and I went to an IHOP and the all black women waitresses completely ignored us for seating- letting all the other blacks come in, eat and leave. My daughter got to see racism up close and said, “let’s go, I GUESS WE’RE THE WRONG COLOR!” She was 8.

Now she is grown, her dream career and married a white man and just had my first grand daughter. Í had NOTHING to do with who she chose, but I do wonder.

I cannot stress enough, the racism ALWAYS came from blacks and black WOMEN are the WORST, even to a little girl who was HALF BLACK herself.

xx
