Letter from Rochester.
Colin,
I was born and raised in Rochester. (50’s, 60’s, 70’s) I watched that city go from a clean, peaceful, wonderful place with tree-lined streets, block parties, and of course, the Lilac Festival. My mom moved us out of there in the early 70’s, after West Chili Ave, Bullshead Plaza, and the whole west side of the city, started turning into a war zone with trees cut down to make way for better street lights, bars on peoples windows, businesses closed due to store keepers selling to escape the crime, the list goes on.
I went to West High, which used to be a beautiful old building but was turned into a trash heap. It was the same for Madison High School. The library on Arnett Blvd. closed due to vandalism and danger to librarians and borrowers, and that whole area became a place a white person could no longer walk down alone, eventually even being in 2’s or 3’s wasn’t safe.
The black people destroyed that city. I watched them do it and even then, back in the 70’s, there were idiots who stood up for those violent, criminal, thieving, lying, bastards. Chile Ave, destroyed, Post ave, destroyed, Thurston Rd, destroyed, Roxborough Rd, destroyed, Arnett Blvd, destroyed, Ingleside Rd, destroyed, Marlborough Rd, destroyed, Genesee St, doubly destroyed, Genesee Park Blvd, destroyed, Genesee Valley Park, full of thugs, drug dealers, filthily destroyed Gardiner Ave, destroyed, Brooks Ave, destroyed…
…I could go on and on. It was heart breaking to see the place I grew up in, the clean, friendly, beautiful, happy, place, turned into a nasty, filthy, drug-filled, violent, ghetto in less than 10 years.
Sorry, I know this is kind of long but really wanted to get across what a great place it used to be to raise a family. Now I wouldn’t raise cockroaches there.
