Letter from a former reporter.
Mr. Flaherty,
In 1975 I was an intern reporter for a small weekly tabloid in South Florida.
I interviewed a Coral Gables PD lieutenant who was running a youth intervention program, primarily for black youths from the East Gables, West Coconut Grove Area. Forty years later this remains a very violent drug and crime ridden area. So I guess the program wasn’t very effective.
He mentioned that the FBI kept complete records regarding the racial and ethnic demographics of all reported crimes. And that he had just gotten the latest study results.
He told me that those particular stats were no longer available to the public, because they tended to make black people look bad.
He also mentioned that at that time 60% of all violent crime in America was perpetrated by black males aged 15 to 45 (mostly on other black people). A statistic I found totally astounding, given that specific demographic can’t be more than about two or maybe three percent of America’s population. Three percent of people committing sixty percent of violent crime.
I subsequently abandoned that particular line of work and became a firefighter and paramedic. I rode rescue all South Florida for more than 25 years. And my anecdotal experience would seem to support that statistic.
