Letter from a daughter in Baltimore.
Colin,
MY own (white) legally-lucid somewhat artsy-fartsy mother (former 1960’s civil rights demonstrator) in her 70’s, has been MUGGED (living) in Baltimore FOUR TIMES (all by black people, once with a pistol being pointed directly at her face), in the past 20 years, and she is STILL steadfastly loyal to an ABSURD black victimhood / non-working class white people suck (even though she isn’t, and never has been)/”can’t we all just get along”/integration-kumbaya-by-the-campfire-together paradigm.
Because of this, her instincts regarding moving around urban areas at night, doing artsy-fartsy stuff with her fellow senior female friends, can best be described as “safety-averse”… and I’m really worry about her when I know she’s out, for this reason.
Even though I have reiterated to her, “Mom, just because you like THEM, does NOT mean that they like YOU… and often, they DON’T” many times, it seems to do nothing to sway her from her larger worldview on nocturnal interracial relations in urban spaces… and I don’t know what to do.
Anybody got any ideas on how I could better address this?
