Letter from the church steps.
Speaking of a black mob attacking an old white person:
In 1978, I was 18 or so. I was a pool shooter. I would shoot pool all over the city. And I thought nothing of walking 27 blocks at 3am. to get home to my beloved roach infested 3 story walk up.
There I was, over halfway home power walking through that down town boulevard. There she was. A bag lady sitting on a bus bench at 3 in the morning. I glance over at her. My feet leave the pavement. I jump a foot in the air and 3 feet backwards. She was dead.
Not only was she dead. She was freshly murdered. I saw the thin cracks in her cheekbones and forehead leaking fresh red blood. I saw her hands still clutching little carpet bags and paper bags full of newspapers and pictures and a ball of yarn.
From experience, I knew she was a holocaust survivor. Only back then we didn’t call them that. They had a crazy look in their eye and we respected them.
The adults around town hired them for odd jobs. The moment my feet hit the ground I heard a roar. Was it a roar of a lion. Was it the roar of the ocean. No. It was the roar of laughter.
My head snapped to the left. I looked across that wide city street. There, catty corner, was a huge church.
The steps leading up to it were 50 feet wide and 30 feet tall. And sitting upon those steps were 25 young black people. A few were standing. A few were female. But, they all rejoiced in my double take, my reaction, as if it were a spit take in a comedy. I ran for my life and never looked back. Until now.
