Letter From a Catholic School On The Black Part of Town.
Mr. Flaherty,
Thank you for taking an interest in my experiences.
I’m now sixty years old and was in grade school during the 60’s in Dayton, OH. We lived on the west side. Predominantly black section of town. In the late sixties my Mother was Catholic and insisted we attend a Catholic school. I have an older brother and sister and a younger sister. We all attended the same school. My older siblings graduated the school prior to it becoming predominantly black.
By the time I was in sixth grade it got to the point I felt all I was doing was trying to survive on a daily basis. Chased to the bus everyday and getting “jumped” daily. My Mother insisted it was my fault because I was hard-headed (which is true) and just couldn’t get along with the black kids because she never had any trouble with blacks. Some of the kids that would attack us where from the local high school.
At the beginning of my seventh year my younger sister was attacked and injured. At that point my Mother relinquished and removed us from the Catholic school letting us attend our local grade school. I can’t put into words how great it felt going to school again without having to fight my way in, and out.
I could not believe it when I was listening to Howard Stern on your video. It brought on a flashback to my youth. It almost brought tears to my eyes to hear someone who went through the same trauma.
I must say, there were black kids that I attended school with who remained my friend even though it brought hardship to them for doing so.
